How to Celebrate Halloween Advanced American English Lesson

hi i’m vanessa from speak english with

vanessa calm happy halloween as you may

know Halloween is a holiday where you

get to dress up in funny or scary

costumes you get to eat lots of candy

maybe you get to go to a Halloween party

or go trick-or-treating and today i want

to share halloween preparation with you

in the u.s. it’s a really big deal to

buy lots of pumpkins and pumpkin

flavored things and to decorate your

yard and to make it look exciting

prepare for the holiday so i want to

show you some of the stores near my

house and i want to show you my

neighborhood there’s some fun

decorations i’m gonna explain it and

hopefully you’ll learn some exciting

words and just see a little view of

American life and American culture are

you ready let’s get started

here we are at one of the grocery stores

that’s by my house it’s called Trader

Joe’s and you can see there are a lot of

pumpkins this is the outdoor area so

they expect that people will pick up the

pumpkins and take them inside to pay for

them you can get cute little pumpkins

some gourds some pumpkins for pumpkin

pies these are fairy tale pumpkins and

they even used an interesting word

pumped for pumpkins pumped means excited

we’re excited for pumpkins and they’re

trying to use a clever way to get people

to buy them here are some other kinds of

holiday foods gourds more pumpkins more

gourds some squash there are a lot of

different varieties of this as you can

see but in the fall season we don’t just

eat fruits and vegetables we eat tons of

pumpkin things here our pumpkin spiced

cakes pumpkin pies the store has so many

different varieties pumpkin muffins

pumpkins chai spice loaf anything made

with pumpkin is really in season

this time of the year you can get

pumpkin cereal Wow

I really can’t imagine what they didn’t

make with pumpkin there are pumpkin

pancake waffles

pumpkin scones this year I think we’re

gonna make these pumpkin scones pumpkin

bread and muffins do you think they went

a little bit crazy with pumpkin things

pumpkin pie mix Wow there’s a ton of

stuff and this is the craziest pumpkin

spiced pumpkin seeds they flavored the

pumpkin seeds to taste like pumpkin it

kind of feels a little bit over the top

to me pumpkin seeds are great we don’t

need them to be flavored same with

tortilla chips these are pumpkin

flavored tortilla chips sometimes they

like to make absolutely everything

pumpkin flavored if you haven’t

understood that yet even pumpkin beer

pumpkin ale and here they’re using the

word pumpkin this is a kind of slang or

casual way to pronounce the word pumpkin

here is a huge tower of pumpkin bread

and pumpkin butter so you can make this

pumpkin bread and then put the pumpkin

butter on your pumpkin bread and muffins

pumpkin craze here’s some decoration

kits you can decorate your pumpkins you

can put a strobe light inside of your

pumpkin that’s pretty cool you could

even buy a Halloween card now personally

I’ve never gotten a Halloween card I’ve

never bought a Halloween card but these

ones look pretty cool there’s spider

webs cats and witches and ghosts a

little bit more on the the scary side

than the fun side plenty of stuff that

you could use to celebrate Halloween

here we’re gonna take a walk in my

neighborhood this house is pretty

typical they just have some pumpkins at

the top you can see like agree

which floaties and some ghosts and

spiders here this house went really

simple with their decorations they made

a spiderweb in their front porch I think

it’s pretty cool and on the other hand

these people went a little bit more

extreme there are lots of spiderwebs

there’s a cemetery some skeletons I

think they really like Halloween and

these people have some skeleton

flamingos some pumpkins and they also

have a mini graveyard this is pretty

common for front yard decorations you

can see a kind of common theme here also

this family for their graveyard that

they made they decided to make it

current

so some famous people who died this year

for example David Bowie he has a grave

in their graveyard because they were

really sad about David Bowie you can see

also Willy Wonka and what so what do

people do with those pumpkins

well they carve them and that’s what Dan

and I did we got two small pumpkins and

we just used a knife and decided to make

funny faces in them and then we put a

candle inside so that they light up at

night we don’t have a front porch

because we live in an apartment but we

put them in our house and it’s just good

entertainment for ourselves thanks so
