How to Pronounce BURRITO American English
In this American English pronunciation video,
we’re going to go over the pronunciation of
the word ‘burrito’.
This week’s Word of the Week is ‘burrito’.
Now, this word comes from Spanish, but it
is oh so common now in American English, and
we do pronounce it differently. It’s a three-syllable
word, bu-rri-to, with stress on the middle
syllable. So, it starts with the B consonant,
and we have the schwa vowel in that first,
unstressed syllable, bu-, bu-. Then we have
the R consonant and the EE as in SHE vowel.
Burri-. So the tongue will pull back and up
for the R sound, and then come back down with
the tip here for the EE vowel, -rri-. The
front part of the tongue will stretch towards
the roof of the mouth for the vowel. Burrito.
Then we have a T, but it comes between two
vowel sounds, so it is a Flap T. And finally,
the OH as in NO diphthong in the last, and
unstressed, syllable. Burrito [3x]. I’m going
to eat a burrito for lunch.
That’s it, your Word of the Week. Try it
out yourself. Make up a sentence with the
word, record it, and post it as a video response
to this video on YouTube. I can’t wait to
watch it.
That’s it, and thanks so much for using
Rachel’s English.
