hey i’m teacher tiffany and i’m ready to

expressions now

expressions come from today’s podcast

so after you learn the words and

expressions

you can click the link in the

description to listen to the podcast

episode alright here we go our first

expression our first idiom actually is

step out of your comfort zone

one more time after me step out of

your comfort zone good job now

what does this actually mean to step out

of your comfort zone

so this is an idiom and it means to do

something

new that scares you or makes you

nervous in order to grow so

let me explain a situation that really

matches this idiom

now i lived in south korea for 10 years

but prior to going to south korea i had

never

lived abroad my comfort zone

was america where my family and friends

lived

but i decided that i wanted to be a

missionary i decided to leave my family

and friends to go to another country

so i stepped out of my comfort zone

make sense nice you got it so again

after me

step out of your comfort zone

good job now number two here we go the

next one is

bread winner

bread winner don’t worry it’s not about

food

one more time after me bread winner

good job now what does this actually

mean let’s see again so

breadwinner is a very popular word used

in

english now breadwinner is the person

usually only one who earns the money to

support

their family or household so remember i

said it’s not about food

it’s actually the person that brings

home the money

that’s right the person that works the

most and brings home the money

to prepare food to buy food and buy

things that are necessary for a family

so we say bread winner

good job all right now our third one

this one is also a very good one and

it’s important for you to know

generalize good job now for

pronunciation again

generalize good now

generalize is something that you may

have heard before but i want to make

sure you understand the meaning it’s a

verb right

it means to make a broad statement

or assumption about a whole group

of people again to make a broad

statement or assumption

about a whole group of people we say to

generalize

so for example i am an african-american

woman i’m very proud of my culture

but when i went overseas i realized that

there are individuals who have other

views

of african americans right because of

movies or because of maybe television

programs

they think that all black people all

african americans are one way so when i

went to korea for example

and i met a korean on the street they

immediately had

a view i had an opinion of me as a black

woman

because of what they saw in a movie or

on a television program

now i was fine i had good experiences in

korea

but many of my students would say oh we

thought

all black people da da da for example

we thought all black people uh were

athletic or

could dance or could sing now it is true

many of us can sing and dance

but that was a generalization right

they generalized or they made an

assumption about an entire group of

people

remember we’re all different so does

that kind of make sense

to generalize i think you got it so

again let’s go back over again what we

learned here we go

the first one was the first one the

idiom you got it

step out of your comfort zone was the

second one

nice the money bringing the money home

you got it

bread winner and finally we learned

good job generalized excellent now we

only learned
