ways

uh to approach your study okay

uh okay um good everybody’s saying hi

facebook facebook facebook oh it looks

like facebook is over here

i am broadcasting from my house yes if

you are just joining great facebook

everyone is there hi facebook i see you

i’m checking you on my

phone hi uh mustafa marta from the usa

hello

welcome fantastic everyone is here let’s

get going

okay today we are going to talk about

using your daily life for your studies

here are today’s lesson boards if you

want to take a screenshot but um

okay first i’m going to talk about

making

habits how do we make good habits what

can you do

for your studies to make good habits

second

uh some ideas basically study strategy

ideas about

media and then third uh some

miscellaneous so many

different ideas for your studies okay so

let’s get into it first i want to start

this lesson

i want to start by talking about your

habits

so habit something you do regularly

it could be a good habit like studying

or exercising or

sleeping or a bad habit like eating lots

of junk food or

biting your nails or whatever so

i’m going to talk about making good

study habits

for example like i have a habit like i

just did now i

share the video when i started the

broadcast so that’s an example

of a habit something you always do

so i want to start this lesson

by talking about habits because they’re

important

for your studies not just language

studies

any study anything you want to improve

right

so first to make a habit for your

studies it’s a good idea to make your

study a habit

so that means you have to think about

how to do something consistently so

consistently means

you do it at the same time or in the

same place or

in the same sequence so when you

create a study a study habit

you can for example choose the same

time for your studies every day so

school is a great example like

every day at three o’clock i go to

english class

maybe so maybe you choose the same 30

minutes

every day to study great okay

this actually for me this doesn’t work

very well for me

this second tip is best for me and my

life

so if you don’t like to choose the same

time every day

or if it’s difficult for you to choose

the same time

every day you can try this follow the

same

sequence of activities follow the same

sequence of activities

means you always do one action after

another so for example this

for example you wake up then brush your

teeth then

eat breakfast then steady vocabulary for

15 minutes

then take a shower for example so this

is

this is a sample morning routine

sequence so in this sequence you always

have some kind of study

activity inside it right so this this

pattern is really good for me

so if you have a flexible schedule

then maybe this kind of habit is good

for you

yeah so think about when you study every

day like

is it always during your break or maybe

on your commute

that’s another good thing that was

really really helpful for me actually

studying on my commute

okay all right uh fadia says study in

the same

room these habits help you yeah being in

the same place when you study

can help you as well you mentally uh

get into you prepare yourself for study

okay

then uh the next tip about your habits

is to choose something that fits your

schedule choose something that fits your

schedule

so one problem i think everybody has

sometimes when we start something new

we try to use a lot of our energy for it

for example like i’m going to wake up at

six

in the morning and go jogging every day

like

that’s a big change really quickly we

get tired right

so try not to make a big schedule change

for your studies like waking up an hour

early

maybe short term so for like a week or

maybe a couple months maybe maybe it

might be helpful

if you have something special to prepare

for

but long term you might get tired so

you might get tired and maybe you know

the expression

out right so you might lose your energy

and lose your motivation

and quit completely so try to choose

something that

fits in your schedule naturally now you

don’t have to make a huge

change actually one tip uh something i

love to do is when i when it’s difficult

for me

to get motivated to study i use i use my

phone

i set a timer i say okay i’m going to do

this activity for 15 minutes or 20

minutes i set the timer i start my

studies or i start my activity

and i do it until the timer finishes

that’s really helpful for me

sometimes it’s just hard to start hard

to get motivated

so that’s my recently that’s my favorite

way uh to study

it’s using a timer uh and then i take a

break and then come back

maybe so that’s a tip i personally like

but choose something that fits

your schedule now okay all right

then this last tip about building a

study habit is to

choose things you enjoy and that

challenge you choose things that you

enjoy and

that challenge you don’t forget you need

to do things that are a little bit

difficult right so don’t just watch how

to introduce yourself or how to talk

about your hobbies

videos so these are some ideas

right what can you do how can you go

outside of a textbook or outside of a

classroom

you can use media your hobbies you can

go to a discussion group

online it’s easier now maybe i don’t

know you can use social media accounts

you can keep a journal

you can do sports read the news more

whatever

so you can choose something that you

enjoy and that’s a little

challenging for you so you always are

building

your studies okay andres guadamus

on youtube says i’ve been using

flashcards that you recommended oh yeah

i love flashcards

and it helped me dominate 300 new words

in only a month

wow nice job that’s fantastic that’s

super good okay

awesome jermaine says my workout habit

is monday wednesday saturday 10 to 12.

okay

that sounds good that sounds good

someone says well this

record will this video be saved yes this

video will be saved to you

on uh facebook and youtube okay

um all right so this is the first part

for today

talking about habits how do you make a

good

habit uh and how do you make a habit

that

makes sure you like helps you make sure

you will continue

that habit with your studies it’s

important to review

and do new things at the same time so

consistency is key

okay good all right so in part two and

part three today we are going to talk

about some ideas some ways you can use

your favorite topics to study but

before we get to part two a really quick

reminder about this banner

at the bottom of the screen if you want

to study with us with our lessons

video and audio lessons and get

downloadable

content that you can check out you can

click the link

at the bottom of the video

if you’re watching on youtube or above

the video on facebook you will see this

screen

where there are details about premium

and

premium plus accounts on our website

english class 101.com

so if you think you want to study with

us you can check this out

check all the details and find something

that’s good for you

all right so let’s go to part two now

let’s start to look at some ideas for

your studies i want to talk about using

media lots of people write about using

uh

media for your studies so let’s take a

look also please don’t forget if you

haven’t make sure to like this video and

share it so that other people can find

today’s lesson

hopefully get some good tips yeah okay

all right so how do we use media

these are just a few ideas if you have

more you can send them in the chat

yeah send them in the chat and then uh

your digital classmates can also get

some ideas

oh someone says advice for teenagers

like advice for teenagers learning yeah

i think media is great for young people

when i was a teenager

i was when i was studying japanese as a

teenager i used

media a lot so i hope this is helpful

for you

okay let’s go to study strategy ideas

this part too will be about media movies

music tv youtube videos podcasts

that kind of thing okay so

movies and tv let’s look at this type of

media first

these are some ideas but i put

on this side here a day so

i imagine like a one week study schedule

if you want to use media for your

studies great

but how do you do it so that you don’t

for example

just watch a movie one time and then bye

you’re done you finish

how do you use media to review

to learn new words here are some ideas

and a study schedule this is just a

guide just an idea

something you can do okay so for example

you can watch one movie in english a

week

so choose a movie in english every week

i think uh

from my experience studying other

languages

uh it’s sometimes difficult uh to

learn new words from like science

fiction or fantasy movies they’re really

exciting and cool

but those might be a little bit

difficult to start with but it’s up to

you you can choose

so for example on day one of your

schedule

watch one movie in english week

okay then maybe two google that means

google search

google the script so the script means

the words

in the movie yeah the lines the things

the actors

say google the script and study your

favorite scene from the movie so your

favorite scene means your favorite part

so you don’t have to study the whole

movie like

two hours of english right maybe choose

your favorite scene

or choose a scene you thought was really

interesting or cool

and try to study that for a couple days

yes

and maybe day two then day four

to review you can write the lines so

write the words

from your favorite scene in a notebook

and practice saying those words practice

saying the lines

out loud yourself then

on the last day of the week on day six

or maybe later

you can watch the scene again or watch

the movie again

and check to see if you understood

so this is this is just an idea of

course you can do other things and

practice

more but uh oh someone also writes yeah

karim writes with subtitles too yeah you

can watch with or without subtitles in

your language

in english whatever is helpful for you

but make sure you review right so don’t

just go

one time and then be done right so you

need to review

and think about these new words think

about how the actors said the words

and this could be one way that you can

do that

okay all right so um

rosia says a good idea a scene maybe

five or ten minutes

i think 10 minutes it depends on your

level really

like if you are if you’re a super super

beginner

10 minutes is a lot of time right and

if the actors are speaking very quickly

with lots and lots of new words that

might be too much

right so for yourself try to think about

uh choosing choose something that’s a

little challenging

and you feel you can pick up some new

words from that scene

yeah so it’s up to you a little bit

okay um let’s see i don’t see other

questions

uh facebook do you have any questions uh

imeji i hope i said your name right on

facebook says i’m not sure that in

english movies they speak english so

difficult to follow they speak very fast

i know

so a lot of you write to me to say like

why do i understand you

but i don’t understand english movies

i’m speaking more slowly

and i’m trying to speak clearly so that

many people can understand and it

becomes

easier to pick up new words so i use

uh like a clean simple way a simpler way

of speaking because we have

many learners from many different levels

right

all around the world so that’s why

movies sound

much more difficult right that’s why

movies are harder to

understand those actors are speaking

native speed

native pace uh native pace they’re

they’re not thinking about vocabulary

choice or grammar

right so that’s why but that’s

also why checking a script this tip here

that’s why this is super important

check the script so that you can catch

all the words

and you can try reading the script as

you

listen to the movie to hear how the

actors

connect their words together because

they don’t connect words the same way

that i do

in these lessons yeah so make sure you

practice with different materials

not just me but thank you for watching

okay

let’s go to the next group of tips

youtube videos woohoo

youtube all right we love youtube right

youtube and other videos so if you’re

watching a face

facebook for example how do we use

youtube videos or

we have video lessons of course at our

website at english class 101

so maybe many of you are using those how

do you use this so

for example you can watch a youtube

video

every day great check the captions

for new words yeah check the captions if

you are on

youtube there’s a caption caption means

the words yeah

uh or subtitles uh on the video so you

can check those captions for new words

um

youtube isn’t always perfect with the

captions but i try to speak clearly

so you should be able to find some new

words there

okay then you can use the video for

shadowing practice too

so shadowing shadowing means repeating

after someone

yeah so when you are listening like if

you are listening to one of my videos

you can try to say the same thing that i

say right

right after i say it to practice your

intonation your rhythm

your pronunciation and so on okay

cindy sms on youtube one of our uh

youtube members hi

says i use it a lot yeah youtube for

sure many people

love to use youtube okay another idea

is to write your own sentences with new

words write your own sentences with new

words

this is something i do i have a journal

uh

i have a like a book like a notebook and

when i’m studying

new topics when i’m studying something

new i write questions and i

write sentences with the new words that

i’m studying and that helps me a lot

like creating something new with the new

things that i learned

okay and if you have other tips uh if

you have other tips

for your youtube uh video uh

use please send them in the chat so

other people can get some ideas

uh patty holmes on facebook says i put

the captions on movies

and news anchors ah so i can understand

them maybe more clearly that’s a good

tip

yeah so you can use captions for news i

do that actually in japanese i use the

captions

on uh my tv like there’s a special news

broadcast with captions that’s so

helpful for me

to catch more information okay good

can you tell us about a single movie

some people are asking for movie

recommendations oh

it’s so difficult because everyone has a

different level

if you are a super beginner don’t

be shy about watching kids movies in

english they are great

like native english speaker kids watched

english movies for kids to learn uh

and to enjoy so you can start there if

you like

there are songs which can help you to

understand the rhythm

of things if you’re a super beginner

don’t be afraid of kids movies

they’re great right okay then let’s

continue on

let’s continue on to music music how do

we

how do we use music okay so for music

some ideas you can listen to a song or

an album so just just listen of course

but don’t just listen right so

what else can you do read the lyrics

lyrics means the words in the song yeah

the words in the song so google do a

google search

or maybe you can use uh you can use the

book

inside the cd if you have a cd i don’t

know

okay you can try to sing along with the

song too

this is a good way to practice uh

your spoken skills a bit more you can

try to sing the song from memory so

after you listen to it a few times you

can try to sing the song from memory

this is really really challenging i

think

i’ve i heard a song in in korean

that i thought was interesting and i

tried to i tried to sing it myself

i’m not studying korean i just heard it

and i tried to sing it myself and it was

really hard so make sure you try to

try to say the words yourself yeah it

seems

easy when you listen to it but when you

try to say it

it’s kind of challenging sometimes okay

another idea i did this when i was a

teenager a lot

this was one of my favorite things to do

i tried to

translate the song into my language

translating just on paper and with a

dictionary and with google search

so i searched for the lyrics i search

for the words in the song

and then i try to translate the song and

don’t worry about a perfect translation

the translation doesn’t have to be

perfect

but you’re thinking about how the words

are connected you’re thinking about the

vocabulary choices

you’re using your brain to try to

understand the language

so this is something that i did that was

really really fun

for me so maybe it will be fun for you

too

okay all right uh oh

let’s see lots of people are saying

hello still hello if you if you have

just joined hello

and welcome okay uh time is going quick

so let’s go to

uh the last part of today’s lesson

remote control desk do i need to

stop uh i’ll try to stop at the regular

time today but

uh we’ll see uh okay let me know

remote control desk if there’s something

a deadline for me today

okay um i don’t see questions

so let’s go to the last part also if you

haven’t please make sure to like this

video

and of course share so that other people

can get some tips

for their studies okay let’s go so

the last part i have uh some other

topics some other ideas

for putting your studies together in

your daily life how do you do this

next one is social media

social media this is great to do uh i

know many of you

follow me on social media and see my

goofy updates

my goofy pictures uh and so on that’s

cool thanks very much but

you can follow accounts that are

interesting to you

follow accounts that are interesting to

you not

just language learning accounts so why

why do i suggest this because language

learning accounts are good

and like videos are good because we

share information directly right like a

lesson

yeah you learn new vocabulary words or a

new grammar point

but it’s important to follow just a

regular

person regular people using the language

naturally

so you can understand how to use it

naturally yourself you can understand

what kind of person uses this vocabulary

word or

why did that person use that grammar or

those kinds of things so follow regular

accounts maybe your favorite celebrity

or maybe a writer or someone related to

your hobby or your favorite

sport so follow accounts that are

interesting to you

not just learning accounts okay

all right then uh next try writing

updates

in english so if you are comfortable you

can try

writing on twitter or maybe instagram or

facebook i don’t know

you can try writing your own updates

about your daily life

in english if you are shy that’s okay

too

you can make a private account yeah so

only for you to write and maybe you can

follow

some people you’re interested in twitter

can be good for that

uh or maybe a private instagram account

too is helpful

so you can try writing updates yourself

in english

okay all right let’s go to the next tip

journals i mentioned this a little bit a

journal journal or a diary

as well this can be digital on your

computer

on your phone i prefer to use a physical

like i have

over there on the other side of my room

an actual journal where i write like new

uh new words when i’m studying it’s like

my study journal

you can write about your day in english

write about your day in english so what

did you do

how was your day how did you feel all

those kinds of topics

you can practice lots of grammar points

by writing a daily update

you can try writing about upcoming

events

so that means you can try writing about

what you are going to do

yeah so you practice future tense that

way

you can try writing a story about your

past to practice past tense

so a journal keeping a journal like

every day

can be a great way to practice as well

so

this goes back to making a habit maybe

at the end of every day

you write a journal entry in your study

journal so that’s another idea

okay some other points hobbies sports

news and so on you can

read an article in english or listen to

a broadcast in

english so this can be a really

interesting point this can be something

interesting because

if it’s a popular topic like a soccer

game

for example you can check the

information

in your language so for example maybe in

the morning in the news you read

something about a sport you like a

soccer game you really like

and then in the evening you read an

english article

about the same topic so you already know

the information right but you use your

brain

to understand it in english so

read an article in english or listen to

broadcast like a podcast or radio show

maybe

something like that try to do that uh

just to think about

the topics you already know about in

english okay uh

okay other questions i don’t see other

questions a la rattam says do you think

reading a book

is a good idea before you can pronounce

the words yeah i think it’s okay

and you can you can get uh new if you

find a new

word you don’t know in your book that’s

great that means you can learn something

so you can write it down or if you don’t

know the pronunciation

you can do a google search for

pronunciation just type the word into

google search

and type pronunciation and you’ll get an

audio file so check that out

okay all right finally flash cards my

favorite oh

i forgot try participating in a hobby

group in english or join a sports team

so if you have a hobby

and you live in a city with an

english-speaking sports team or hobby

group or something like that

you can try joining that group and

practicing as well

okay finally my favorite always for

vocabulary study i love

flashcards they’re just so helpful for

me and for me

they’re for me they’re very easy to be

consistent about

when i have something to focus on i

write i like to write flashcards myself

and then i throw my flash cards in my

purse in my bag and i practice

like uh while i go somewhere else you

can use digital flash cards too we have

uh

smart flash cards at english class 101

so you can check those out

if you need some ideas but i love

flashcards

uh for vocabulary study uh just to pick

up some new words here and there

okay so that is everything for today

those are some ideas

for uh integrating your studies how to

use

your daily life for your study so i hope

that that’s helpful for you

this was this using language in my case

using japanese in my everyday life was

great and of course the biggest tip if

you live in a country

where english is spoken or the other

language you’re studying is spoken

go out and talk to people and make

friends and

read the things that they write on

social media like i’ve learned so much

just from checking my friends

updates on social media vocabulary words

all kinds of things so please check that

out

and please try to use the language in

your everyday life it becomes a lot more

fun

okay all right uh someone is spamming in

the youtube chat

can our moderator fix that okay

i’ll be back next week as always so next

week’s lesson title oh sorry sorry sorry

i forgot if you want to take a picture

of today’s lesson boards

here you go i will show this very

quickly boom take your picture

about today’s topics making habits media

study ideas and etc miscellaneous

study ideas okay so let’s uh

let’s end there next week’s lesson let

me find next week’s lesson here we go

march

can you believe it oh my gosh so next

week march 31st

this to express the things we have to do

we have a responsibility to do

your responsibilities

this should be a good time should be fun
