yes all right I’m on I’m on I missed the

button again for the last time this year

I missed the button that says start

streaming welcome back hi everybody

welcome to our last live stream of 2017

thank you very much for joining us and

we are going to start in just a couple

minutes so as you join us please make

sure to hit the like button whether

you’re watching on Facebook or on

YouTube and please send us a message as

well in the chat and we’re going to get

started in just a couple of minutes when

everybody joins we’re getting set up as

usual

so yes today’s topic is going to be

Christmas Christmas is going to be the

theme for today but not only Christmas

related vocabulary words but I’m going

to explain some expressions you can use

when giving and receiving gifts so good

okay Facebook your app I’ll oh I’m Juan

Garcia you’re fished first on Facebook

today welcome welcome what else

YouTube is also up hi everybody on

YouTube gear may Mokhtar read Brandi

Marcin papaya young ha wow there’s a lot

of names hi guys hi everybody hello from

Brazil or ello everybody from Brazil

rather I’m not in Brazil hi everybody

welcome good good good ok it looks like

both things are up so I want to begin

we’ll wait for everybody to join and

while we wait as always I have prepared

a little graphic from my life this week

from how I used last week’s grammar

point so if you joined last week maybe

you remember that we talked about

memories how to talk about your memories

in last week’s livestream so I have a

this week I used an Instagram post not a

Twitter post so this was my I was

talking about today’s livestream with

this post so today’s livestream is

Christmas dreamed of course but in the

text here I said when I was a kid when I

was a kid I was terrified of this Santa

decoration that was in my grandparents

house so when I was a kid is a way to

introduce our memories we talked about

this and

few other similar expressions in last

week’s livestream so if you missed that

please check out last week’s live stream

do I want the Santa hat I don’t know the

producer is asking if I want the Santa

hat I don’t know maybe it may be towards

the end maybe towards the end of our

lesson today I don’t know I I can’t

handle the distraction I’m not very good

at that kind of thing but anyway that

was how I used it in my life

our producer dragged me she said she

says maybe if I get 100 likes on wet on

Facebook we’ll get a Santa hat both on

both Facebook and on YouTube okay we’ll

see we’ll see I can’t keep track of the

likes in real-time there’s too much

information but that’s your guys’s job

then a bunch of likes and maybe we’ll

end the year with the Santa hat anyway

um oh she says they’ll tell me all right

okay

more people are in good so let’s go to

UM

oh it says 100 likes for the Santa hat

oh my gosh okay we’ll see how that goes

so if we get 100 likes we’ll get a Santa

hat going for the end of the year that’s

nice that’s nice okay but anyway I want

to mention someone had a question

Francois Francois you’ve asked questions

before on the livestream about the

grammar points we talked about last week

Francois asked what did you like to do

would it be correct to say what did you

like doing as a kid yes you can say both

what did you like to do and what did you

like doing are both correct okay so uh

looks like a lot of people have joined I

don’t see much I can is Facebook okay I

can see YouTube I can see YouTube but

Facebook I see Facebook on my mobile

device is going good I don’t see it on

the screen so hopefully I can keep up

with the chat somehow on both ways hi

from japan hello Zachariah

hello MD hello Mohammad hello good all

right I’ll keep track somehow with all

of the devices we have but let’s get

started for today’s topic let’s get

started on today’s topic which is

Christmas Christmas yes but if you just

joined today we’re going to talk about

expressions for giving and receiving

gifts giving and receiving gifts and

then a couple points at the end of the

lesson give oh okay good Facebook is up

on

the computer now - all right so today I

want to talk about two main topics first

will be how to give a gift like how to

explain why you chose a gift and then

what to say when you give the person a

gift

that’ll be first second will be the

opposite how to receive a gift so like

nice questions you can ask people when

you receive a gift and then how to

accept a gift politely even if you maybe

don’t like the gift so that’s what we’re

going to talk about today in our last

livestream so again if you’re just

joining please hit the like button it

really helps and share of course as well

  • okay let’s get started though on our

first topic for today how to explain why

you chose a gift okay so you might not

think about it really that much but it’s

kind of a good thing to be able to do if

you just walk up to somebody and you say

like here’s a present by it’s sort of

awkward it’s kind of strange so let’s

talk about some ways to make this more

smooth let’s talk about how to do this a

little more gracefully okay so if you’re

friends with the person you are giving

the gift to if it’s a friend or it’s a

family member you can introduce the gift

in kind of a casual way you can say I

got you something

or I got you a little something so this

is for friends and family members if

however I’m gonna steal the mouse here I

sorry if however it’s a colleague or a

co-worker that you’re talking to you

might need to give a little bit more

explanation so if it’s your colleague or

if it’s your co-worker you can say

something like it’s been great working

with you this year it’s been great to

work with you on this project I wanted

to give you something to express my

appreciation for example or just a small

something to say thank you so let’s take

a look at this

oh we have little we have little stars

instead of like dashes or bullet points

today oh that’s cute it’s the end of the

year very nice okay so these are the two

points yeah Merry Christmas our producer

says Merry Christmas

so for friends and family when you give

someone a gift

can say I got you something I got you

something

oh okay our producers keeping track of

the likes for today so it says I got you

something so you can include here I got

you a little something to to uh hi oh

okay I don’t want that what sorry our

producer has just brought me a Santa hat

okay so we’re gonna finish the live

today this way very festive

can you guys that’s good very festive

turkeys okay thanks

thank you ice thank you producer are you

back at your desk yeah thank you thank

you Alicia

okay so let’s do it here we go I got you

something it’s for your friends and your

family members I got you a little

something is something we can do too

and then if you’re talking to your

coworkers you can say just a small

something to say thank you for

everything this year so this is slightly

more formal just a small something a

small object to say thank you for

everything this year so these are two

expressions you can use when you’re

giving someone a gift then a couple

things when you receive this hats

walking the text then when you receive

when you receive a gift though or um

when you give someone a gift to they

might ask you can I open it can I open

it so the verb that we use for gifts is

open open so you might hear the

expression can I open it can I open it

might be the question they ask you when

you get the gift or when they get the

gift so you can say can I open it or if

they say can I open it you can say sure

or you don’t have to open it now but

open it is the gift the gift related

verb to open to reveal a gift so we

don’t use reveal we don’t use something

else we use the verb to open for gifts

so if you want to explain them why you

chose a gift so if you say something

like you begin with I got you something

like for your friends and your family

I got you something then explain why you

chose that gift for them so there are a

few expressions we can use to explain a

reason for a gift so let’s talk about a

few so first is this one I thought you

might or I thought you would

blah blah blah so in meaning in the

future I thought you might maybe there’s

a chance of something or I thought you

would so a high high probability of

something I’ll give you a couple

examples in just a second this next one

is very general I saw this for the

singular and I saw these for the plural

form I saw this and I thought of you or

I saw these and I thought of you would

be good and then here if you got someone

something for a specific purpose you

could say I got you this or I got you

these and then explain the reason why

you got that thing okay so these are

kind of some ways to explain a gift to

explain a gift all righty then so let’s

talk about a few examples then so um if

I want to use this one for example um

request

sorry pretty good writing to me request

500 likes for that no I don’t want to do

that so if we producers are saying if we

get lots and lots of likes we’ll do some

other stuff I guess for today so please

hit the like button please hit the like

button and we’ll I don’t know we’ll do

something do something hit the like

button we’ll keep going Amy um the the

example I wanted to talk to you about

I thought you okay I have to get back on

track I thought you might or I thought

you would I want to talk about these

right now so for example I could say I

got you this for a singular item I got

you this bottle of wine because I

thought you would enjoy it I thought you

would enjoy it would be nice or I got

you this gourmet coffee so you can use

this I

you this gourmet coffee because I

thought you might like to try something

new

so I want to use this pattern for a

question for you guys now so in your

case a your your turn now let’s try to

use this so imagine you are going to

give a gift to someone you are going to

give a gift to someone what do you say

to them so I think there’s a question

that we have prepared coming up over

here somewhere maybe is it there so the

question is what explain a gift that you

are giving to someone and the reason you

chose that gift explain the gift you’re

giving someone and why you chose it so

to do that needy will do I think it’s

coming so you can use this with I got

you this and then follow it with your

gift to begin with so I got you this

gift oh here comes I got you this gift

because I thought you might or I thought

you would so I just said I got you this

bottle of wine so the gift name goes

here I got you this gift this bottle of

wine because I thought you would so

would shows a high possibility or a high

probability and might shows like a

chance kind of a maybe feeling so I got

you this something because I thought you

might

buh-buh-bah so imagine you are giving a

gift to someone so please explain your

gift what is the gift you are explaining

what is the gift and why did you choose

that gift hmm okay so let’s think about

it what is the gift and why are you

giving the gift all right anything so

far hi guys I see lots of people have

joined them too okay what is the gift

why so I got you this Santa hat because

I thought you would enjoy it for example

okay

mmm is it okay I got you something

I got you a kendama again dumber so you

could practice okay good good good I got

you these make sure if you’re using the

plural if you’re using the plural

version of the gift and this should

change to these I got you these shoes

because I thought you would love them

them so remember this in this this is a

singular example sentence I got you this

should change to I got you these if

you’re using the plural form yeah all

right great so answers are coming in now

I got this coffee mug because I thought

you might use it everyday nice one okay

I got you this gift because you are so

sweet to me a very nice okay I got you

this jacket because I thought you would

like it nice Mahmud okay uh I don’t see

anything on Facebook oh okay Facebook is

coming up I got you this coat because I

thought it would be useful for you this

winter a nice one lon okay I got you

this phone because I thought you might

love this phone you would call me every

day very nice that’s from Ezra let’s see

a messiah says I got a 3d maze because I

thought she might like it great good

good good

Alan says I got you this sweater because

I thought you would need it this season

nice one okay on YouTube Bart says I got

you these shoes because I thought you

might like them perfect perfect so using

the plural form here good um lots of

people saying shoes why are so many

people saying shoe there are quite a few

Takia hey Chucky I says I got you this

robot because I thought you might enjoy

it it I thought you might enjoy it good

okay

uh over on YouTube I got you a bear cuz

I thought you would enjoy hugging him at

night that’s funny you guys have funny

reasons wow there are a couple robots

their shoes and robots why do we have so

many shears and robots it’s pretty good

Oh another one a PlayStation 4 because I

thought you would like to defeat me once

in your life playing Fifa oh that’s a

challenge christian has issued a

challenge over on facebook very nice

very nice okay but it is 15 minutes past

the hour so it is time for a

break it is time for a break so today we

have as we’ve seen maybe before but

cheat sheets so this is the special deal

for this week so please check that out

oh hey great so if you’re just joining

live today’s theme in case you couldn’t

tell

today’s theme is Christmas and we’re

talking about how to give and receive

gifts so in the beginning of the lesson

we talked about giving a gift and how to

explain the gift so now I want to move

on to how to receive a gift if someone

gives you a gift how do you receive it

what do you say so let’s move on to that

part of today’s lesson alright so when

you receive a gift it’s a good idea it’s

kind of a nice idea to ask a small

question about the gift so you can say

something like wow how did you know I

wanted this or how did you know in

general so how did you know we use we’re

gonna see in just a second how did you

know is an expression that we use that

means how did you know

this was the item I wanted but we just

say how did you know here it is yeah so

how did you know I wanted a lightsaber

for Christmas or how did you know I

wanted this how did you know I wanted

Li’s so singular again singular for a

singular gift or for a plural gift how

did you know I wanted this how did you

know I wanted these but make sure to say

this if you if you use these one of

these expressions you should probably

say it with like an upbeat like excited

intonation if you say like how did you

know it sounds really insincere so

please make sure to be energetic when

you say this how did you know how did

you know I wanted this which means it’s

the it’s the it’s to give the person the

other person the idea that wow this is

something you really hoped to get this

is something you really hope to get so

you can ask these two questions these

are really good ones to ask some other

follow-up questions that might be useful

if for example if for example you

receive a gift and you’re not so excited

about it like you receive something and

you’re like oh wow that was off very

nice of this person but maybe it’s like

it’s not your favorite item or it’s

something that you’re not so excited

about you can use an expression just to

kind of create conversation like about

where they purchase the item where they

purchased it so before we studied like

the singular and plural forms for gifts

so you can apply the same thing here so

this is for something that people are

that you are happy to receive maybe but

maybe here if you get something and

you’re kind of not so excited about it

you can say oh where did you get this oh

where did you get these or something

that shows you’re interested maybe and

you are happy to talk about it but maybe

so you don’t have to pretend to be super

excited about it but you can still make

conversation about your gift oh where

did you get this or where did you get

these and of course just consider your

facial expression to like don’t

don’t look sad or don’t look

disappointed like try to be respectful

of the person when they give you a gift

but this is a good question that’s kind

of a neutral question if you receive

something you’re not so excited about it

okay so a couple things not to say a

couple of questions you should not say

if you receive a gift that you are not

excited about

if you receive something and you’re like

well um you’re not really thrilled about

it don’t ask a question like why did you

get me this don’t ask don’t ask this

question why did you get me this this is

a very negative sounding question like

if you say why did you get me this like

it sounds like this is totally not a

match for me this is totally not a match

for me at all so why did you get me this

don’t use this expression when you

receive a gift also it’s generally not

good manners to ask about the price if

you ask someone was this expensive or

were these expensive it sounds a little

bit rude in many cases so that’s a good

question to avoid was this expensive

were these expensive it’s a good idea

not to use those so please be careful of

that okay oh we have updated text all

right so these two questions don’t you I

would avoid using these two questions so

why did you get me this or why did you

get me these like not such a good

question to ask for receive when you

receive a gift don’t ask about the price

either all right hat is kind of itchy

okay so I want to make those points too

but finally if you get a gift and it’s

quite a lot maybe you receive a very

expensive gift or you’re in a situation

where maybe for your company or your

work policy you cannot accept a gift in

those cases you can say thank you very

much but I cannot accept this I thank

you but I cannot accept this I cannot

accept this so you can you should

probably begin the expression with thank

you but I cannot accept this gift okay

finally to finish your accepting of the

gift after you ask a question or

something just say thank you so thank

you so much or wow this is so nice of

you or wow I really appreciate it so I

think we have this coming up too in just

a second so when we accept a gift of

course say thank you or thank you so

much or wow this is so nice of you with

that emphasis on so wow this is so nice

of you or wow I really appreciate it I

really appreciate it sounds a little bit

more formal than thank you so much or

this is so nice of you here we go

so well I really appreciate it this is

good for um your co-workers if you

receive something at work or if you

receive something that’s kind of more

like a professional situation you can

use this wow I really appreciate it

oh yeah Pierre has an example of on the

YouTube chat Pierre Medina hi Pierre

says why did you get me this what’s

wrong with you yeah avoid that question

don’t use those questions because they

sound very aggressive and like not

appreciative told me has a funny

question on the YouTube chat why did you

get me this Ferrari I wanted a Porsche

well that sounds like a very nice

problem to have I don’t know about you

Tommy but that sounds like a very nice

problem to have son bula on YouTube this

is American English I speak American

English I’m from California I have more

of a West Coast American English accent

but my pronunciation is a bit

exaggerated in this in this video okay

good morning Jakarta alright so I think

that’s everything for part 2 I would

like to discuss so it’s time for a

second break yes good it is time oh it’s

a little past time so if you missed it

ah today’s special whole deal is PDFs

the cheat sheet PDFs that maybe some of

you have seen in the past if you have

not downloaded them it is a great time

to go download them so that you can

study over the holidays so these are

quick cheat sheets for specific

situations so for example meeting your

family

leave this could be a really good one to

practice over the holidays many people

meet up with their family members or do

some travel during the holidays so you

can check those cheat sheets and see

like how do I say these things in

English this could be a good chance to

do that

so please check the link below the video

under the video on YouTube and above the

video on Facebook to download these so

please go download these cheat sheets

from the website and of course you can

log into the website and see a bunch of

other resources too so please check that

out this is a great time to grab them

all to take them all to pick them all up

to download them and study with them

over the holiday so please do check that

out that’s our special for this week’s

for this week for the end of the year I

suppose so please go take a look at that

oh okay it is free it is free so please

go and enjoy your free stuff okay but we

have about five more minutes so I want

to finish with a couple points general

points about Christmas and greetings and

so on so maybe some of you saw the

Christmas video that we put on the

channel I was wearing this hat in the

video too briefly maybe some of you saw

the Christmas video on the YouTube

channel that went up two days ago so you

might know some of these things I’m

going to explain now and but if you

haven’t seen the video please go watch

it I got to I got to record a message at

the end of the video for everybody

watching so please check that out I hope

you get to see it but I want to make a

couple points because I checked I

checked out like the comments a little

bit and I noticed a small issue when you

greet someone on Christmas Day oh when

you greet someone on Christmas Day or

just before Christmas we use the

greeting Merry Christmas Merry Christmas

so this is kind of a greeting we only

use we only use Merry in American

English for greetings for Christmas so

you’ll see it here in just a second so

here it is Merry Christmas we have some

nice decorations down here so Merry

Christmas this is the typical greeting

use American English greeting we use for

Christmas time so we use merry please be

careful I’ve noticed some of you are

using ma rry the spelling ma rry please

be careful

merry is like to get married to marry

someone the sound is the same the

pronunciation Merry Christmas

and like to get married the

pronunciation sounds the same but this

spelling is different M e rry means

happy like full high spirits full of

happiness we use it in an expression

like eat drink and be merry merry means

happy like happy things happy times good

stuff very positive so please don’t make

a spelling mistake with this this should

be M e rry so please be careful there

however after Christmas we stop using

this phrase so the day after Christmas

we do not use this phrase you can use

this before Christmas and on Christmas

Day then after Christmas it’s a good

idea to change your greeting to happy

new year or have a happy new year have a

happy new year happy new year or have a

happy new year hardly I just explained

what merry means merry means very happy

full of high spirits hi Carly I just

answered one of your questions and ask

Alicia I think so thanks for the

question

umm then when you yes have a happy new

year is the one you can use after

Christmas but before the new year before

the new year okay but if you are wanting

to like greet somebody at this time of

year so it’s before Christmas it’s

before the new year you can say both of

them you can combine these two to say

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year both

of them we can put them both in the same

greeting we can put them both there so

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year if

you listen to English Christmas songs

you’ve probably heard this expression

like Merry Christmas and a Happy New

Year something like that so we can

combine these two Merry Christmas and

Happy New Year

so to all of you watching Merry

Christmas and Happy New Year and of

course you can use happy

all the days as well happy holidays is a

nice and general expression yeah yeah oh

thanks for all the likes I just sound

like a bunch of this guy thanks guys

okay but time we only have about a

minute left and today is our final

livestream for the year so that means

it’s time for me to finish up um I’m
