The Ultimate Guide to English Prepositions AT IN BY

okay I think it’s rolling hi everybody

welcome back to our weekly live stream

my name is Alisha and today we are going

to talk about prepositions we are going

to cover three prepositions in this

lesson I’m going to talk about how to

use in at and by this lesson is going to

cover basic preposition rules so I’m

going to talk about that okay

as I said I think that it’s fixed now if

you want to get this 31% off deal please

check the link below the video if you’re

watching on youtube or above the video

if you are watching on Facebook yeah

there is an ad running in the background

I heard now I have a YouTube video I

think I’ve muted it though if you have

any other issues please let me know okay

you’re hearing other voices I think that

it should be better now so there’s a

little bit of lag between when I talk

and win it

so if it sounds okay I think it should

sound okay ok so that’s announcement

number one announcement number two if

you have questions during today’s lesson

about other topics if you have a

question about grammar about vocabulary

about culture whatever something like

small that’s a little different from

today’s topic you can send it to me for

this series this is the ask Alicia

series where you ask me questions and I

maybe answer them this is a screenshot

from that series so look for this series

on the English class 101 youtube channel

this is there’s a link to send me your

questions in this it is English class

101 calm slash ask - Alicia so please

send me your questions there don’t write

them in comments or other things like to

make sure I see it - please send it to

me there because they come all over the

place okay great

those are my announcements for today I

hello MTA enthusiast hi Jose colleague

Chester friendly hi I am doing well I

Facebook I’m coming for you again this

week I am broadcasting from my house

I’m checking Facebook here YouTube is on

the PC so I’m coming to say hi to you

Facebook now hi everybody hi Facebook I

see you I see you Facebook Lewis and

sugar Angela hello Benjamin hi everybody

thanks very much for joining us okay we

are going to talk about prepositions

today

if you have not already please make sure

to like and share the video so other

people can find today’s lesson I will

show you today’s lesson flow okay let’s

take a look today I’m going to cover

three prepositions I’m going to talk

about the preposition in the preposition

at and the preposition by so in each

part of today’s lesson I’m going to talk

about location or position uses and time

uses

then maybe a little bit of other stuff

too so we’re going to cover these three

things today let us begin

oops okay so we’re gonna start today

with the preposition in in let’s begin

by talking about the preposition in but

um oh okay

ooh that’s bright that’s bright okay

how can i I’m going to turn down my

brightness on my video so we can see the

board more easily it’s a little bit

bright I think yeah that looks better a

little bit better okay let’s get started

ah that looks good okay let’s get

started this is the first part locations

so let’s talk about how to use in with

locations so the first use of in I want

to talk about is when you use it before

city and country names so here are a few

examples of this like I’m in Vietnam or

he’s in South America or we’re in

Australia so again you can also use it

with a continent so continent is like in

this case South America or in North

America or Europe or Africa whatever use

this before city and country names to

talk about the place like you are

visiting so I’ve note I’ve noted here

use this when you’re visiting a place so

when you’re traveling when you’re

traveling somewhere you can say like I’m

in that place or as I’ve got here he’s

in that place when you want to talk

about the place where you live you

should probably use the verb live like

he sorry I live in something something

it sounds a little unnatural to say I’m

in to talk about a place to where you

always are I mean there are some cases

but if you want to express specifically

the place where you live

it’s a little clearer to say I live in

some place okay that so this is the use

of in here with locations I want to note

this part right here though it’s a

little still a little bit right oh

that’s interesting today this part right

here it’s may be hard to read it says

he’s in the hospital versus he’s at the

hospital these two sentences I know are

very very similar they are both correct

he’s in the hospital though means he’s

sick so if someone is in the hospital it

means they have been hospitalized they

are sick and receiving treatment so this

means someone is staying at the hospital

like to get medical care this one he’s

at the hospital means he is visiting the

hospital so or this could be for like

you know a doctor that is working there

too so at the hospital means visiting in

the hospital means they are sick the

person is sick so please note this is

one example of a case where the

preposition is really important okay

good all right I am looking for your

questions

where can we ask questions please ask

your questions in the chat if it’s about

today’s lesson please ask in the chat if

it is not about today’s lesson please

send it to me on the ask Alicia series

okay good I don’t see questions I will

keep an eye out though so we’ll continue

on let’s continue on here all right

let’s go to a time so using the

preposition in to talk about time we do

this by using in before a length of time

to express duration so duration duration

means how long something is so some

examples of this

let’s meet in 15 minutes so this means

15 minutes from now let’s meet or he

cooked dinner in 1 hour this sentence

means it took him one hour to cook

dinner or we’re leaving for vacation in

5 days this part that means 5 days from

this point we are going to leave for

vacation one more the test results will

be ready in 2 months

this means 2 months from now the test

results will be ready so in shows a

length of time or is used before a

length of time to express how long

something took or how long something is

going to take yeah we also have this

expression or these expressions within

we say in the morning in the afternoon

and in the evening we use in with these

expressions we use at for night so

please make sure don’t use in the night

really we say at night

slamming Canadian on YouTube says I’m so

confused with prepositions what do I do

steady like you’re doing now the best

thing to do study and practice ok I’m

looking for your examples Karapetyan on

facebook says i’m in home or i’m at home

at home i am at home always used at home

I’m at home I’m at home now so please

use at home I’m going to talk about at

next David says we will go in 15 minutes

is it correct yes that it is

schematically correct yes it is use in

ok other examples are uh says should I

use in time or I’m on time it depends

they’re both correct

there is a video on the channel about

that I will try to I’ll try to share a

link maybe I can put that on Twitter or

Instagram

later or maybe I can put a link in this

livestream after that about in time

versus on time they’re both correct it

depends on what you want to use okay

let’s go to next the next part is about

position so let’s talk about how to use

in with position to express a position

so we use in before an object so you can

see an object or a place to express that

something is inside something else so

for example my keys are in my bag so

that means my keys are inside my bag or

we’re in a cave we are in a cave that

means we are inside a cave many of you

have written I’m in bed right now

perfect yes we use in bed in bed okay or

I found $50 in my pocket so in all of

these examples sentences we use in to

talk about the thing that we are inside

so we’re expressing that feeling of

inside something else okay finally one

more point here over here on this part

we use in to talk about position sorry

position as like rank the rank of

something and by that I mean for example

we won first place in the competition

first place in the competition so that

means like inside the competition we had

this position we use in to talk about

that we got first place in the

competition so this is how we use in the

preposition in this is a basic you can

screenshot take a screenshot of the

lesson overview I will share in just a

minute some of your questions then can

we also say on the bed yes if you are

sitting on top of your bed for example

like reading a book or checking your

phone or something yes you can say I’m

on my bed when

you are under the covers you say in I’m

in bed I’m in bed okay other questions

other questions speak in English or

speak by speak in English we use in to

talk about languages I speak in English

please

speak in Spanish so or just or just

remove the preposition there - okay many

of you are sending me should I use in or

after on here the answer sometimes is

all of them it depends on what you want

to say so that’s what we’re going to

cover in this lesson also please don’t

the chat with your question I’m

everybody needs to have a chance to to

read so let’s please be respectful of

everybody’s texts questions all right

many are here saying do the difference

between this and that let’s look at the

lesson and hopefully I will answer the

question in the lesson I’m trying to fix

the color a little bit here okay good

let’s take one quick break and then

we’ll continue on okay if you missed it

earlier there is a 31 percent off sale

super cool also if you have not already

please make sure to like and share the

video so that other people can find

today’s lesson okey-dokey let’s go to

part 2 I will show you if you are just

joining today’s lesson is about

prepositions prepositions so I just

talked about in we’re going to talk

about at and bye for the rest of the

lesson if you want a screenshot of

today’s topics

Dada this is it so I just talked about

the preposition in

and next I’m going to talk about at and

finally we’re going to talk about by I

will show this again if you missed it

for your screen shot but this is it so

let’s continue to part two for today

part two is the preposition at the

preposition at let’s new alright

what do we do with at okay so as we

talked about with in we’re going to look

at how to use at with locations and with

time expression so first at we use at to

express a place where something happens

or to express like our current position

so many of you wrote like do I say in

home are at home use at home at home so

when you want to talk about your current

position current position means the

place where you are now or the place

where someone is now when you want to

express that news at I’m at home he’s at

work I’m at the office that we use at to

do that

other examples I’m at the bank or she’s

at work or they’re at a concert or he’s

at the supermarket we are at a party I’m

at home so you’ll notice with this one

right here we’re at a party party is not

like a physical it’s not a building but

we use at with events same thing with

this one they’re at a concert yeah so

it’s it’s a temporary place like an

event but we still use at in that case

now Liam says I’m at the press meet now

yeah press meet usually at least in

American English we say press conference

press conference or me I suppose maybe

press meeting okay good I want to point

out this though this is good I think a

good point another one of those kind of

strange situations many

people asked about something like this

use in if it is important to express

being inside a location so like this

example right here

the suspect is in the bank versus I saw

my boss at the bank so like why do we

use in here why do we use out there

let’s imagine this sentence the suspect

so suspect means the person we think did

a crime or committed a crime

the person we think committed a crime is

in the bank so imagine like the police

said this sentence it’s important to

mention they think the suspect is inside

the bank so in is used in that sentence

to express inside here I saw my boss at

the bank so it’s not important to

mention my boss was inside the bank I

just want to express the location I saw

my boss it’s not important to describe

whether they were inside or outside the

bank it’s just a general statement so we

use at in that case okay good Oh

Daniel on Facebook says actually I work

at like your company name yes when you

want to talk about a company as well use

this same location rule so I work at

company name I work at Apple or I work

at Google you can also use for to do

that I’m not going to talk about for

today I don’t have I don’t have time and

resources but you can use for to do that

ok good let’s continue to time

expressions with at time expressions

with that so when you use at use it

before a time of day to express

and something happened or when something

will happen so this can be a past action

it can be a future action it can be a

regular action how do you know what it

is

check the verb tense to know if it’s a

past future or a regular action so let’s

look at examples let’s meet at 2:00 p.m.

so this one let’s meet let’s meet in

other words let us meet this is a future

situation so making it a suggestion I

had coffee at 10:30 past tense had so

this is a finished action I had coffee

at 10:30

or he took a break at noon so noon means

12:00 p.m. so yes I used 2 p.m. or 10:30

you can also use a word here noon he

took a break at noon or this one

I read books at night I read books at

night this is a regular action we know

that because it’s present tense we use

present tense to express regular actions

I ate ice cream at midnight

I ate ice cream at midnight again this

is a past example ate past tense and

midnight means 12 o’clock at night 12

o’clock at night so we use before we use

act before a time of day to express the

point in time something happen this is

how we use the preposition that basic

use of the preposition at yes there are

I’m not talking about phrasal verbs

today but there all of these

prepositions are used in phrasal verbs

but there’s not like an easy rule to

talk about so we’re just gonna use basic

rules for these today Raphael on YouTube

says our night time and at night the

same thing can I use them

interchangeably they

refer to like the same time period yes

but they have different grammatical

functions so like I would say I sleep at

night but I would not say I sleep night

time hmm

so we have to make different we have to

make different sentence structures to

use this alrighty I’m looking for your

questions in time and on time so again

I’ve made a video about this before with

lots of examples I’ll put a link in the

in the description after this live

lesson in time means you arrive with

enough time to do something on time

means you do something at the scheduled

time that’s a very quick introduction so

again I’ll put a link in the description

after this with some more examples at

the end or in the end both again it

depends on what you want to say so at

the end means at the int like at the

endpoint of something in the end means

like eventually or after many struggles

ok

some examples are coming in strong hello

on facebook says I went to the bank at 9

a.m. yesterday perfect good

dawn says hi I work at a matança hotel

is it correct yes good you can use app

for your company’s good Esteban says at

Christmas or on Christmas ah for

holidays I’m not covering on today we

use on on before holidays ok I’m at home

now is that correct yes yes I think I

mentioned it yeah I mentioned the

expression at home here I’m at home

please always use at home I’m at home

not in home at home I’m at home

yes ok let’s continue to a small break

and then we’ll go to bye bye so if you

missed it earlier the team has a 31% off

a deal to learn English at English class

101 dot-com

this is 31% off the premium and premium

plus

and on our website so please take a look

at that if you are interested in

studying a bit with us all right so with

that we’re going to go to the last part

of today’s lesson I will show you again

the flow for today’s lesson so you can

take a screenshot okay

so I talked about preposition in to

begin we just finished the preposition

at finally I’m going to talk about the

preposition by now so this will be the

last one for today we’re going to

compare a little bit with the other

prepositions I talked about so let’s

continue

okay let’s continue to the final part of

today’s lesson so Joan okay

preposition by again let’s begin by

talking about locations and positions

with the preposition by so we use by

before a place or an object to mean near

was okay so many people asked what’s the

difference between by and near by sounds

less formal in American English near

sounds maybe slightly it’s a really

small difference near sounds a little

tiny bit more formal so you can use near

in this sentence for example my house is

by the school and my house is near the

school it mean the same thing or your

bag is by the door your bag is near the

door so by is more commonly used just in

everyday conversation okay someone wrote

by note by is not important by is very

important okay next is I think I left my

coffee by my laptop you’ll notice in a

sentence like this especially it’s like

by just means somewhere near it doesn’t

mean like next to or on top of or

something like that it’s like just

somewhere near something else so it’s

not a very specific

quert okay one more can you put the

dishes by the sink please

so again by here just means somewhere

near the sink so again we use by before

a place or an object to mean near that

thing

Lucas on youtube says can I use I live

by someone yeah you can say like I live

by my friend

or I live by my boss or I live by person

perfect okay next one

okay Oh Shia Xiang I hope I’m saying

your name right on Facebook says I stay

by myself when you use the expression by

myself

it means alone so like I study by myself

or I live by myself

please use by in that expression thank

you for that okay let’s go to the next

one next part is time this right here I

hope that this is the one this is the

point that a lot of you practice from

today’s lesson using by before a point

in time to express a deadline or an

endpoint I have made a video about the

difference between by and until it is on

the YouTube channel please check it in

this very good homework for everybody

this week we use this to express a

deadline many learners mix up by and

until so let’s talk about this very

important point here example one I have

to finish this report by tomorrow by

tomorrow so we cannot use until in this

sentence it is not correct to use until

in this sentence when we use by it’s

kind of like this imagine this blue line

this is a time line from past to future

by marks the endpoint to do something

our deadline our last chance to do

something when we say I have to finish

this report by tomorrow it means I can

finish the report before tomorrow that’s

great that’s fine but this point

tomorrow is my last chance

to do this I cannot use unto

I cannot use them till we use until like

when we want to talk about like a change

in something mmm like I’m not going to

leave until I finish my report means

there’s a change happening there so I’ll

put a link to the bye and until video in

this after at the live lesson another

example he has to leave by 2:00 p.m. to

catch a flight he has to leave by 2:00

p.m. to catch a flight

so again 2 p.m. is the deadline to catch

a flight so he must leave by 2:00 p.m.

he has to leave before this time is also

ok but this is the deadline 2 p.m. hmm

ok

no Limon YouTube broke Jimmy Alisha has

to finish this livestream by 15 minutes

please be careful we cannot use by with

a length of time we have to use by with

a point in time so a length of time is

15 minutes or 1 hour or 30 days those

are lengths of time we have to use by

with a point in time tomorrow 2:00 p.m.

midnight these are specific points in

time we cannot use by with a link every

time okay last one let’s leave the party

by midnight

let’s leave the party by midnight so

again we can leave the party before

midnight but midnight is our deadline to

leave the party all right let’s see

I says I have to start my homework by

midday yes great great example totally

correct

MTA enthusiasts says the NJ Transit

train will arrive at ho ho by tomorrow

yes okay good good good good

before of tomorrow it’s wrong I’m not

sure what you mean by before of tomorrow

like today hmm Oh

or maybe just before tomorrow like I

need to finish something before tomorrow

that is okay

no of in that one okay um all right I

don’t see other questions so let’s

continue - oh I’m late

let’s continue to the last point then I

want to compare these two sentences

because this is another very common

problem that I see with learner’s she’ll

be in the office at 10 a.m.

versus she’ll be in the office by 10

a.m. both of these sentences are correct

it depends on what you want to say this

one she’ll be in the office at 10 a.m.

means at the scheduled time so that

means at 10 a.m. at 10 a.m. at this time

the schedule time she will be in the

office she but maybe she’s going to

arrive at 10 a.m. this sentence means

she’ll be in the office by 10 a.m. means

before 10 a.m. is also possible so maybe

9:45 a.m. is also possible 10 a.m. is

the deadline so maybe she’s going to get

to the office earlier both of these

sentences are correct but they

communicate slightly different things by

does not mean the same thing as at no it

does not mean the same thing as at

please review this lesson for the

differences between by and out I’ll show

you the lesson boards later boom okay Oh

someone says can I say pay by visa yes

you use by to mark like a payment method

we also use with I want to pay with my

visa pay by visa what is the difference

between do it yourself or do it by

yourself

do-it-yourself means you please take

care of it like it can mean you one

person or maybe you as a group do it by

yourself is a command to do something

alone that’s the difference there okay

lots of examples are coming in um

Mohammed on Facebook says I travel by

car your sentence should be I travel by

car yes we use by to mark a mode of

transportation I travel by car I travel

by train

I traveled by bicycle whatever yeah to

mark a transportation mode hmm I have to

finish my report at 5 a.m. okay that

could work

Waleed I hope I said that right mm-hmm

all right some good examples everybody

has good examples he has to take a taxi

by 9 p.m. to stay at work hmm this the

first part of your sentence was good

Kyle oh he has to take a taxi by 10 by 9

p.m. to do something usually like to

catch a flight or to be in time for work

maybe okay all right I have to finish

yeah I’m late so we’ll end there I hope

that this lesson was helpful for you I

will show you today’s lesson topics

again one more time so you can take a

look at today’s topic we covered the

preposition in the preposition act and

the preposition by I hope that it was

helpful for you I will go after this

lesson ends I will put a link to the bye

versus until video and a video about the

difference between in time and on time

in the description so please give me a

couple minutes after this livestream

ends to add that information there I’ll

finish up for today I will be back next

week same time same channel next week’s

lesson it will be May 27th that’s kind

of hard to see isn’t it

May 27th May 27th

10:00 p.m. Eastern Standard time that is

Wednesday now-ish I’m going to talk

about conditional statements many of you

requested conditional statements so

first second third conditional what is

the difference how do we make these I’m

not really gonna talk about questions

I’m gonna focus on the differences

between these statements so please join

me again next week to talk about that

topic awesome okay so I have to sign off

now I hope that this lesson was helpful

for you I hope you picked up something

new about prepositions I will say

goodbye now please make sure to check
