Still an American tune

american tune

is a protest song in slow motion it’s a

meditation on the complex feelings of

struggle

belonging and resignation that many felt

during the awkward years between the end

of the 60s

and the beginning of the 70s it’s sort

of

the break between bursts of action

when we stop to think about the way

things are going

and reflect in this case the vietnam war

was dragging on

the 60s had died with a number of its

most prominent figures

and the nation was struggling to come to

terms with itself

so this is one of the many ways that

people throughout history have examined

america

and in addition to presenting sort of an

indictment of the direction of america

paul simon

also weaves in the ideas that people

throughout history have projected onto

their own

concepts of america the ways in which

we have all in his word

this is american tune

many is the time i’ve been

mistaken

and many times confused

yes i’ve often felt forsaken

and certainly miss you

but i’m all

[Music]

still you don’t expect to be bright

[Music]

so far away from

[Music]

i don’t have a friend who feels at ease

[Music]

but it’s all right

it’s all right for it lived

so well so long

still when i

[Music]

i can’t help but i wonder

what’s going

[Music]

a dream that my soul rose unexpectedly

and looking back down at me smiled

reassuringly

and i dreamed i was flying

and high up above my

eyes could clearly see

the statue of liberty

sailing away to see

[Music]

we come on

[Music]

dude

[Music]

but it’s all right it’s all right it’s

all right

you can’t be forever blessed

[Music]

that’s all i’m trying

[Music]

is

[Applause]

you
