Sustainable mobility on EU islands

good afternoon my name is chuchus i’m

professor in the technical university of

crete

in the renewable and sustainable energy

systems lab and i’m working for

the last 30 years on

sustainable energy and mobility

projects

in my first satellite you can see

you can see the pictures of

some metropolitan cities the east

and i’m wondering if this will be our

our dystopic future

uh so in order to to take

into account very seriously uh climate

change

um the european commission has

implemented several activities we know

all we as we know that europe

is the global leader on this kind of

activities

and very recently announced

a green deal policy towards

climate neutral europe by 2050

the plan has it has integrated several

uh ambitious uh targets

such as ninety percent reduction of

greenhouse

emissions and uh one million transit

stations

by 2025 and

13 million vehicles um

yes this is the big picture

take into account the solarity uh

the suggestion the current situation or

the future situation the island

these are pictures from uh from from

wintertime 2019 creator

climate change natural

disasters and

in the next slide you can see

summertime expectations and what

really the next summer time

guests have seen in on the island so

islands have to face very very extreme

cases and but

but the guests who like very

calm and this is very very very very

comfortable very very useful

uh i would like to

show you some some some details of a

project very important project for us

called civita destinations supported by

horizon 2020 the project was

implemented

in 20 in 12 countries plus china

and participated 29 partners from

from several countries of europe

the the lighthouse cities were

fusar from madeira las palmas from

cancanaria

malta from from alta valetta elba

retinol from crete and limassol from

cyprus

the main goal was to demonstrate to sew

solutions mobility movement solutions

based on

policy or real policy on real local

policies

to change the mindsets of citizens and

stakeholders

and to create a a new image and improve

the image equipments of the cities

and also to to be in

this lighthouse exams for other cities

also

under this umbrella i have created

several

uh live labs the streets

live labs for citizens like live labs

for

four guests um and

it was really a fantastic process um

[Music]

due to covet this year we have realized

it

in a virtual way um and

we hope next year will be also

in the streets and talking with people

and

getting feedback from different mobility

choices in the city

we have also organized a

cooperation with schools more than 3 000

children have educated

on ecomobility and safety

in the city and outside the schools and

it was really a great experience for all

of us

another activity was

to create apps one of this app

is in the screen called so-called

green your drive and um

yeah it was a testing system to about

the knowledge

how drive we how ecologically we drive

retinol was the first city in in greece

where

the the electric bus fully electric bus

was integrated in the transport system

by the transport operator

there and also

the first municipality in

in greece which has

procured an electric car full electric

car

for the technical services

also in retirement we organized the

exhibition

and where installed three charging

stations

were the three the first three public

stations in greta

and we

created some some kind of movement for

electrical

mobility uh

we know very well that now electrical

mobility is

part of the main of the main policy of

the main

national policy for to promote electric

mobility uh also

as most of you know

where electric bikes scooters in

in several places also during the last

two years

um there were some

some electric bikes in las palmas and

also

death mode in other and also almost

in all participated cities however

um the electrical system

of of this of uh of our islands

is mainly based on on fossil fuels

so practically these electrical

cars electrical scooters electrical

bikes

they they consume mainly

conventional fuels

in foreign you can see the pictures

the stations power stations of creta

we consume 78 percent uh

for the fuels so and only 22 percent

is lineable energy resources for sure we

have to increase it

and we we know very well that uh maybe

in the future

in the visit future theta will be 100

percent

dynamically independent and on

dynamically independent and used by

using green energy

in your density sources exploiting also

the interconnection with continental

greece

another example of our work is that we

have put

a network of monetary stations to

for traffic load and to to monitor and

to

assess the environmental conditions

carbon dioxide carbon monoxide

nitrogen oxide hydrocarbons etc

and have created models to to see

which is the impact of the traffic in

the quality of environment in the city

and

retinol is very very clear city is for

sure

um to to to have put also some some

electronic

monetary systems inside cars in some

number of cars and um to to see

how ecologically the drivers

use these cars inside the city version

this is

some some some some results

from from this performance and

and we can translate this performance in

so two

emissions by using these cars

kovit was a big big issue

where scientific covetous era

and the impact in mobility was very it

was huge

uh for instance by using

satellite pictures uh we can

see how how is um

how was france um

during uh march uh 19

2019 and march 2020 the same for italy

less cars less pollution this is very

let’s say very promising image uh

all of us we know that uh maybe during

the next

period of or the current period of covet

we have some elements of

what we call without effect the

situation is coming back

um but we have to learn and

to use and exploit lesos land

from uh from from this from the

combat period we have made a a study

to see the the impact

uh of uh of lockdown

on mobility

as you can see the picture we have

during the first week in of the lockdown

in greece

almost 30 percent less

movement by using a car as a passenger

to the safety of course it’s the same

more or less with bath

and bus is is also an issue

how to solve and how to improve the

safety

for the society for sure uh

vaccine will improve all of us will

prove that

everything will be changed

sunplus is another civitas project

which in which we participate

um the aim is how to create

a efficient sustainable and mobility

plan for

small cities with seasonal

tourism the

city to apply is

of chania as an indicator

is a municipality with 21 residents and

25

21 000 residents and 25 000

pets

for platanias i have already integrated

or tried to degrade

in the mobility in different activities

which is agrofood

it’s education and

logistics especially with congestion

during the

season and of course tourism which is

the main industry

with a growing trend

trying to to to to create this uh

this sample is this

sustainable mobility plan uh we have

already

organized meetings with all

major stakeholders of the isla of the

of the area like the region of

creta the transport operator

police association citizens

association of tourism suppliers

etc etc

these are some some some some maps

how to to we put all information

in a geographical way and to present it

to the stakeholders and to citizens

and to see the response from them

um is the same here different models

uh try to see the system

not only by by one measure but as a

total

for instance is not only to create

one pedestrian or a bike

pathway but to see

which would be also the impact of this

measure in the full operation

of the city these are pictures from

this uh uh for the for from from these

activities in planas

in closing this presentation i would

like to to put some issues uh first of

all

uh let’s think uh how to integrate this

experience from kobe as an opportunity

for climate change

uh the agenda we can think that

environment a sustainable environment is

high priority

for the islands because this is our

product

season fluctuation makes this

very very complicated to for them

to design and to to

use and to maintain the infrastructure

also the islands the most of the case

are missing resources and capacity and

to degrade the green deal and also the

most of the cases

the touring sector is composed by small

businesses family businesses

so to understand and to change the

performance towards sustainability

and the energy new energy directions and

european commission policies is rather

complex thank you very much for for your

time and i hope

that this presentation was useful

for some of you
