The healing power of wordsin lyrics and in life
[Applause]
[Music]
foreign
i get so deep in my own head
[Music]
an endless pit in my own bay
[Music]
up with these made-up fears
i draw myself and made up tears
[Music]
you say that this is ending here
i hold you and i disappear
i disappear
[Music]
i disappear
[Music]
let me hold you like
[Music]
you say call me my koala let me
hold you like gotta
[Music]
some nights feel like a heavy load
a ticking clock and i explode
the words get caught up in my throat
you give me space but keep me closed
sometimes the voices get so loud
[Music]
so loud like six feet underground
i wake up on the battleground
scared that i won’t make it out make it
out
god what if no one remembers we’re here
bones turned to dust is the last
[Music]
[Applause]
[Music]
let me hold you like
[Music]
i disappeared
[Music]
would i lie to you you say
call me my koala let me hold you like
i say i’m a wreck i’m a crazy mess
you say call me my koala let me
hold you like
[Music]
[Applause]
we are fortunate to hear from our
listeners how our words
help them get through high school or get
over a heartbreak
so we spend a lot of time searching for
authentic lyrics
yet in our own story we forgot about the
healing
power of words and the words that we
used almost cost us our dreams
we started out as two awkward kids
learning how to navigate life on tour
with a pile of instruments
thrown in the back of a 15 passenger van
several years into our music career my
sister unexpectedly received an
opportunity to compete
on a reality tv show and it set us on
different paths
for the first time we felt jealous
and competitive and then lonely
and lost so i quit the band and we
barely spoke to each other for five
years
i started to notice the words i used to
describe that dark part of our history
together
i referred to our band’s past as our
band
drama and i would say things like
i’m a jealous person or i’m a bad person
for reacting the way i did i carelessly
threw around these
damaging words and they kept me stuck
in a painful past but then i thought
about the care we used when we write
songs
and i decided to try and heal our
relationship
instead of referring to our band’s past
as our banned
drama i say we went through a hard time
but we figured it out and now we
appreciate
every opportunity because we know it’s
not going to be forever
instead of saying i’m a bad person
i say look i made a mistake
how can i grow and move forward
we spent some time growing into our own
autonomy but ultimately we missed the
road and that smelly
15 passenger van
we went to sister therapy we learned how
to say
i’m sorry
and i love you and we are still working
on our
relationship but our new words did make
us feel better
and are the inspiration behind this next
[Applause]
song
[Music]
dear heart
are you ever coming back to me
did you ever notice how i need you
now to experience the things i see
dear heart
i know you’re hiding out somewhere
i’m feeling up without someone to
tell me that i’m still enough
[Music]
show me which way to go
tell me it gets easier
i’m scared i’ll lose control
can we go back to the way we
[Music]
were
dear heart
hey friend
i know you’re feeling incomplete
i wish i knew just what you need cause
when you’re
hurting i can feel how deep hey
friend
i promise i won’t fix
[Music]
show me which way to go
tell me it gets easier
i’m scared i’ll lose control
can we go back to the way we
[Music]
were
[Music]
[Music]
don’t give
don’t give up on me
i’m still
i’m still pulling myself together
i need
[Music]
i need time to breathe
don’t give up on me
show me which way to go
tell me it gets easier
i’m scared i’ll lose control
can we go back to the way we
were high
all they used to make you bittersweet
and you’re not as quick to trust what
looks like love
cause the last time they left both of
us
[Applause]
you
