about one of the most used phrases that
i use that my english students don’t
know it’s the phrase i bet let’s get
started the phrase i bet means simply i
could imagine
or i think so i could imagine
i could imagine that you are pretty sad
because your dog died but it’s a much
more casual fluent thing to say if you
say i bet that you were really sad
when your dog died you are talking or
imagining someone else’s emotions i bet
that you are really sad when your dog
died i imagine that you were really sad
i don’t know i am not certain but I bet
you were really sad when your dog died
or I bet that you’re hoping to get a
raise at the end of the month I don’t
know that you want to get a raise at the
end of the month I’m not certain but I
could say oh yes I bet that you want to
get a raise at the end of the month I
bet that you’re curious if you’re going
to get a raise at the end of the month
it’s thinking about someone else’s
emotions thinking about someone else’s
thoughts the second way to use
I bet is to think about something that
might happen in the future so you could
say I bet that I’m going to break my leg
when I go skiing because I have terrible
balance I bet that it’s going to happen
I think it will probably happen I have a
suspicion that it will probably have an
I bet that I’m going to break my leg I
bet or you could say I bet that it’s
going to rain today it’s really cloudy
and that’s true it’s very cloudy
actually it is raining right now so I
bet that it’s going to rain today it’s
really cloudy if it is only cloudy if
it’s not raining like it is now you
could say
I bet that it’s going to rain today I
think it will probably rain today it’s
the same thing as saying I think it will
probably rain today maybe it will rain
today I bet that it’s going to rain
