Advanced English Lesson Chocolate Shop Speaking Vocabulary Grammar Pronunciation
hi i’m vanessa from speak English with
vanessa calm today I have some good news
and some bad news
let’s talk about it the good news is
that you’re going to have a sneak peak
at the February lesson set for The
Fearless fluency Club we are going to go
inside the chocolate shop where my
husband Dan works you’re going to see
the chocolates we’re going to interview
and talk with the owner of the chocolate
shop and then we’re going to go into the
factory and we’re going to take a look
at how all of the chocolates are made
this is an extra special lesson so I’m
going to give you a sneak preview now so
that you can see what is going on in the
fearless fluency Club and learn English
with me hi everyone I’m here with Dale
who is the owner of the French fried
chocolate lounge and we’re really lucky
to talk to her today about story and how
you came to be the owner of this awesome
place so would you like to just briefly
introduce yourself
sure I’m Jan Ratigan my husband and I
started this business almost 10 years
ago together call in Asheville ten years
or so how did you get to be in Asheville
well we lived together in Costa Rica for
two years
whoa how did you get to coast through
time okay we’ll start at the very
beginning okay the beginning of the
beginning the beginning of the beginning
was in Minneapolis
let’s get something to eat
oh I’m doing great well it’s a little
cold today but I see you’ve got awesome
ice cream here what do you recommend
what are these these are actual cacao
pods
they’ve been dehydrated and they’re sent
to us from Costa Rica Nicaragua Peru and
Guatemala and they are pretty tough and
you can hear the food and the beans
which we make our chocolate whip will
grind up the chocolate are a little dry
that business and turn it into that and
then it is permanent it feels a flips up
so that’s the smaller set positive yeah
I guess yeah along with this great
conversation video for the month of
February if you join The Fearless
fluency Club you’re going to learn some
great expressions in a vocabulary video
with my husband and I we talk about each
word back and forth so that you can see
another conversation and you can hear
two perspectives this month in February
we’re going to talk about some idioms
like lighting a fire under me and also
you’ll learn three ways to use go
through something you’ll learn about
seventeen to twenty new expressions that
were used in this conversation the next
expression is to work out and it’s not
this kind of workout it is for something
to happen in a positive way to be
successful to be successful yes so in
the video with Jo
she said that they bought an abandoned
farm but it didn’t work out to live on
the farm they wanted to live on the farm
but it didn’t work out maybe the house
wasn’t stable enough for them to live in
or it was too far away or something
something didn’t work out and they
couldn’t live there
yeah and I would say this phrase kind of
means that you try to do it doesn’t mean
that you didn’t try it means you really
worked hard but it just didn’t work it
didn’t work out yeah or it did work out
so if you’re trying to ask that girl out
on Valentine’s Day and she says no when
your friends ask you what happened what
happened you could say oh it didn’t work
out
are you gonna just rub your shoulders
and say it just didn’t work out it just
didn’t work out no yeah and can you
explain that word that you just said
it’s not just shrug shrug track that’s
like I don’t know it’s no big no big
deal no big deal or as a gesture
oftentimes we just move our bodies
without saying anything or just go hmm
so this means hmm it’s not a big deal
but it didn’t work out
so what about for you in your life what
is something that has work to help for
you or maybe something that didn’t work
out well a lot of things have worked out
for me
luckily yeah I have a I have a good
relationship
now wonderful our relationship worked
out well for Valentine’s Day
only bruh Valentine every day and when
we went to teach English in Korea we put
a lot of work in to go to Korea and it
all worked out
yes so we put a lot of work into it and
it worked out it was successful sure
what about something that didn’t work
out something negative it doesn’t have
to be too serious either it could be I
tried to cook dinner and it didn’t work
out well I’ve had I’ve had a number of
jobs that didn’t work out I worked as a
photographer for a a company but it was
kind of a bad company where you would
line people up and you would try to get
them to take a picture like stand here
please take a picture King and then you
would try to sell them the picture
that’s that job didn’t work out mostly
because I didn’t like that job yeah and
this seems like nowadays with cell
phones and everyone has their own camera
you don’t need to pay someone right to
take your picture this was before they
went on a like a river cruise
yeah on a cruise yeah but they didn’t
ask to have their picture taken it was
kind of the photographer’s job to push
it so I’m glad that didn’t work out I
don’t think you I was weird
you weren’t very happy with that Tom all
right let’s watch the clip where she
said this yeah so it didn’t work out to
live on the land but we still we held on
to it and the significant screw as we
decided to move to a tional yeah so it
didn’t work out to live on the land but
we still we held on to it and the
significant screw as we decided to move
to Asheville yeah so it didn’t work out
to live on the land but we still we held
on to it and the significant screw as we
decided to professional in the grammar
lesson we’re going to talk about a
really commonly used sentence structure
this is called if hypothetical sentences
let’s take a quick look at the lesson
and you can see what I’m talking about
and how you can use this in daily life
welcome to this month’s grammar lesson
where we’re going to talk about how to
make if hypothetical sentences before we
get started I want to ask you a question
because I would’ve see if you can answer
this question before we even talk about
it together
my question is let’s imagine that you
can only eat one food for the rest of
your life what food would you eat how
would you answer this sentence how would
you answer this question what food would
you eat try to answer it in a full
sentence instead of just saying
watermelon try to say a complete
sentence start the sentence with the
word if that’s my hint for right now
start with if and you can imitate the
verbs in my class the fourth video
lesson that you can download for the
month of February in the fearless
fluency Club is the pronunciation lesson
in the month of February we’re going to
practice shadowing
something that the owner of the
chocolate shop said she said four
important sentences we’re going to
slowly shadow each sentence we’re going
to emphasize each word and I’m going to
help you with the intonation with
linking and with each vowel sound let’s
take a look at that pronunciation lesson
jail said trust and transparency are a
big part of our values let’s slowly say
each word I’m going to pause a little
bit after each word and I want you to
repeat out loud after me are you ready
trust imitate my mouth here especially
the vowel sound
I think vowel sounds are the hardest
part about a lot of languages so let’s
imitate these vowels trust and
transparency are aa big part of our
values huh this is a workout exercise
because we emphasized and we exaggerated
each vowel sound I hope that you can
take a look even use a little mirror and
see how your mouth compares to mind when
you’re saying this because Jael said
these so quickly I think it’s good to
take a step back and all say them slowly
for you so that we can practice let’s
take a look one more time at this
sentence I’m going to take it slowly and
if you have a little mirror take a look
at your lips and your tongue and make
sure that they’re open or wide or closed
at the same time as mine especially
focused on vowel sounds let’s say that
sentence one more time
to add all of these things all together
vocabulary grammar pronunciation I’ve
created a story this is a story using
different verb tenses but it’s also
using all of the elements that you’ve
learned in this lesson set so far you
can listen to the story you can read the
story you can answer some quick
questions about the story let’s take a
quick listen to what you’ll hear in the
February story jail and Dan had come up
with the crazy idea to quit graduate
school and move to Costa Rica and start
a new life graduate school
didn’t seem to be working out so it was
time to start over they decided to buy
an old school bus and finally of course
when you become a member of The Fearless
fluency Club you can join us in our
number one English community on Facebook
you will meet other members and we have
live lessons once a week in this
Facebook group so this is a great chance
to ask me any questions and to practice
with other members it’s kind of lonely
to learn at home by yourself so I want
to create a community and this is a
beautiful place where you can feel
encouraged and get to know other members
who are learning English too well before
you get too worried there’s good and bad
news together it is that typically the
price for the fearless fluency Club is
27 US dollars per month this is
something that will be renewed each
month because I will give you a new
lesson set each month and of course you
can cancel whenever you like it’s just
your choice but this is $27 before
February 1st so if you join before
February 1st you can join for $27.00 per
month but if you join on February 1st or
after it for
ever it will be $35 per month
the price is increasing so I want to
give you a chance this is the little
good news I want to give you a final
chance to join at the original price if
you join before February 1st you can get
the original price and it will always be
the original price for you so if you are
already a member of The Fearless fluency
Club don’t worry if you joined before
February 1st don’t worry the price will
always be your starting price unless you
cancel and come back to the course
you’ll have to pay the new price but if
you are a member before February 1st
your price is locked you will continue
with that price and if it’s the lower
price good news for you
that’s excellent how can you join The
Fearless fluency Club before the price
increases well there is a quick link in

join the course and learn about
chocolate with us for the month of
February I hope to see you there bye
