welcome today’s lesson boards let’s take
a look this is what we’re going to talk
about in today’s lesson
first we are going to review basic
future tense grammar
going to and will then
i’m going to cover two patterns you can
use
to talk about two plans in one
sentence so that will be part two and
part
three i chose some patterns to practice
today that are very
open so you can be flexible with them
and we’ll talk about how to use them so
let’s begin i’m going to share the video
uh okay cool i’ve shared it
and now i will begin you please like and
share as well
you could like it that’s awesome that
helps okay
let’s go to part one part one
from today for two day rather basic
future tense grammar let’s review future
tense grammar uh going to
and will classic questions from learners
what is the difference between going to
and will
let’s talk let’s talk about going to
first so i’m going to the store i’m
going to school
what is this for we use going 100
sure decisions i know i’m going to do
this this is my plan
100 we use going to
for a decision made before
the conversation a decision made before
the conversation
so we’re talking now i chose this plan
before i started talking to you i’m not
deciding now
so this is something i decided before
we spoke sometimes we also use
going to for a very strong decision
in the moment so we’ll show examples or
we’ll look at some examples of this now
okay so for example
a plan a 100 sure plan for example
i’m going to go hiking
this weekend i’m going to go hiking
this weekend so i’m 100
sure about this plan you can send your
plans in the chat if you want to if
you’re watching live
another one a negative one he’s not
going to come today he’s not
going to come today so we are 100
sure like he’s not going to come to the
office for example
yeah so 100 sure plan
here is a strong decision
made in the moment let’s imagine this is
a parent talking to
their kid you are not going to
that party you are not going to or you
are not going to go
to that party so 100
sure these decisions and we made them
before the conversation
some of you are sending your examples
nice santiago says i’m going to travel
to italy when the pandemic ends
nice sounds good i would like to travel
i very much like to travel
other ones uh franklin jose says i am
going don’t forget your i’m
yeah not i going i am going i’m going to
the beach
next week very nice i am jealous okay
how about adding 30 minutes to your live
stream no can do
30 minutes only we got a team situation
here i’m gonna work
uh 10 hours every day on this project
okay i’m going to
work 10 hours good okay let’s go then
to will what’s the deal with will so
what is different
between will and going to we use will
for like unsure decisions for example
when we want to make like a guess about
the future future future like
what will earth be like 10 000 years
from now
for example we’re not sure that’s an
extreme example
but when we’re not sure about something
or
when we make the decision in the
conversation we decide in the
conversation so
i did not start talking to you with a
plan
but i decide now while we’re talking
so let’s look at some examples like this
one
maybe i’ll have a salad
for lunch maybe i’ll have
a salad for lunch here’s my will maybe i
will
i’ve contracted it yeah i will becomes
i’ll
maybe i’ll have a salad for lunch so
i use this because my decision is unsure
yeah
i haven’t decided yet i don’t know yet
but i’m thinking maybe i’ll have a salad
for lunch
okay here’s another one she’ll probably
call later she’ll probably call
later so again we’re not sure we’re
making a guess
about the future she’ll probably in this
case it’s not a decision from the person
it’s someone else’s decision we’re
making a guess when is she going to call
well she’ll probably call later so
the key here will is used for things
we’re not sure about
and we make the decision in that moment
going to is for a plan we already
decided
yeah okay okay i’m looking for your
examples now
uh alaratam is the present continuous
also used to talk about the future we
can use that ing
verb form yeah like i’m going to the
supermarket that’s a bad example with
going to
but for example i’m walking to the
supermarket after work you could say
that yeah if you wanted to
okay uh i’m going to go home
in 40 minutes uh hijaz cozy on facebook
i’m going
home not i’m going to home i’m going
home in
40 minutes okay all right good
uh let’s go to a break and then we’ll go
to part
two we will look or rather we’re going
to look
at some patterns that you can use to put
them together uh to put
sequences of your future plans together
yeah
so i hope you have lots of questions and
examples and we can review together yeah
if you’re watching live
okay um super super quickly reminder if
you missed it earlier there is free
stuff for you from the link below the
video if you’re watching on youtube
above the video if you’re watching on
facebook you can find
your favorite topics like this this one
says singing but actually it’s about
music the back here
this is all about how to talk about
music you can pick up a few phrases a
few expressions to use
uh like on social media if you practice
on social media that could be really
helpful
there’s a bunch so check the link and
download them you need your name
and an email address and you can get it
so check it out
okay let’s go to part two then also if
you haven’t please make sure to hit the
like button yeah give it a thumbs up it
helps the um algorithms share this video
with other people so
that would be super cool let’s go to
part
two part two
pattern one so i chose uh two focus
patterns for today
to talk about sequences of future plans
and
we’ll talk about some variations with
these two okay
first let’s look at this pattern after
i verb phrase a
i future tense verb phrase
be so after i hmm i
hm okay that’s the kind of rhythm of
this pattern
also of course here i have i you can of
course use he
or she or we but to practice today let’s
use i
okay so let’s look at an example
and break this down after
i finish work today
i’m going to meet a friend after i
finish work today
i’m going to meet a friend so the first
action finish work
second action meet a friend what is the
grammar here
after i finish work today so note this
verb finish this is not finishing not
after i finishing or not after i
finished we don’t use that here after i
finish so no change to this verb yeah
just the base
verb form after i finish work today
here is my future tense verb phrase we
just practiced
going to and will yeah in this case
i’m going to meet a friend after i
finish work today i’m going to meet a
friend
so this use of going to
shows the speaker made the plan before
the conversation
yeah it’s also correct to say after i
finish work today
i think i’ll meet a friend you could say
that too
both are correct but this choice going
to or will
changes the feeling of this sentence
okay
all right you can send your questions in
the chat
let’s see uh javier after finishing is
it correct
after finishing work today yeah you
could say that after finishing work
today
i’m going to meet a friend that’s fine
okay
uh let’s see what’s the difference
between about two and going to
uh about two refers to something that
you are
planning to do in the very near future
yeah
uh okay after i write this report let’s
go to the next one after i
write this report i’ll probably eat
lunch so after i write this report i’ll
probably
eat lunch again this verb right here
no change in this verb do not use past
tense for this verb
after i wrote no after i wrote this
report i’ll probably eat lunch
not correct for this pattern after i
write this report
i’ll i’ll so here i’m using will
i’ll probably eat lunch
you can use this probably to show the
level
of certainty so you can say after i
finish this report i’ll eat lunch
that sounds i just decided now this is
my plan after i
write this report i’ll probably eat
lunch
that shows there’s a chance a small
chance
you might do something else yeah so
probably shows you’re not 100
sure okay i’m looking for your questions
libra says after i finish lunch i’m
going to campus
very nice after i finish lunch i’m going
to campus please make a video of
vocabulary words and phrases
please use your search skills on our
channel that is what our channel is for
there are so many videos and vocabulary
words
and phrases okay um
la fanda says after i finish class after
i finish class i’m going to watch
a movie after i finish class i’m going
to watch a
movie okay um
karina says after the live stream
finishes yeah after the livestream
finishes
i’m going to go to bed good after the
livestream finishes i’m going to go to
bed so in that case yes
uh your live stream in place of eye
after uh the live stream finishes i’m
going to go
to bed okay on to this one
i’ll wash the dishes after i eat i’ll
wash the dishes
after i eat so in this pattern
or rather in this example sentence i
changed the order yeah
in this one my future tense verb phrase
is here in the beginning i’ll wash the
dishes
my after clause here is at the end
this is fine so why do we choose
which one how do i choose which one to
use what do you
want the focus to be in this sentence
i’ll wash the dishes after i eat we’re
showing
kind of that’s that’s my focus in my
mind right now
you could say after i eat i’ll wash the
dishes also
100 correct it’s up to you for the
feeling you want
in your sentence yeah okay cool
uh all right i want to mention a note
then this note here
sometimes sometimes you might hear
present perfect
used in the after clause you might hear
this
uh occasionally and i feel like it might
be slightly more common in british
english i speak american english
so you might hear this let’s look at an
example
after i’ve done my homework
i’ll email it to my teacher
after i’ve done my homework i’ll email
it to my teacher so i’ll email my
homework to my teacher after i’ve done
my homework maybe assignment
i’ll email it to my teacher why does
this person use after
i’ve done here what’s the deal so
this is less common this is not as
common as something like this you
again you might hear it usually it’s
this pattern we talked about
but you may hear this to show
how the after clause after i’ve done my
homework in this case
affects the second future tense action
so in this case these two actions have a
very close relationship yeah
after i’ve done my homework like my
homework assignment
is the thing i’m going to email to my
teacher right
so there’s a close like cause and effect
relationship here
you might sometimes hear people
using this uh present perfect
pattern here after i’ve done my homework
but again this one is more common
this one we just practiced here okay
all right so other examples are coming
in victor says i’ll play my guitar after
i watch the class after i watch the
class
okay um
let’s see you n peng i will go to bed
after i
listen to you speak after i listen to
you
speak okay so verb phrase to you speak
okay uh mitt says after i finish
uh study oh after i finish
maybe my studies today or after i finish
studying we need that noun there yeah
finished studying today
i’m going to meet my boyfriend good okay
um
good good good okay lots of good
examples are coming in
let’s go to um our our second pattern
our last pattern for today then
all right quick reminder don’t forget
hit like
it helps other people find the lesson
okay
your examples are looking good a lot of
people are forgetting uh one point for
many people who are watching
a lot of people don’t forget your little
uh and
and thus yeah your articles lots of
people are saying i’ll make a coffee
after i watch
class or i’ll make uh sorry that one
mohammed yours is fine i’ll make a
coffee after
i watch the class that’s fine some
people are writing
after uh after i watch uh
class or something like that don’t
forget to put those little articles in
there yeah or i’ll watch
movie i think i saw a couple of those
too i’ll watch
a movie don’t forget your articles okay
let’s go to the next pattern
i wanted to practice a pattern that is
commonly used
in with negatives yeah i know we
practice
lots of positive sentences but it’s
important to practice making
negative sentences yeah so let’s look at
this one
this one features unless unless
so here’s the super basic pattern i
future tense verb phrase a
unless verb phrase be
in this pattern we use the negative
quite a lot
so let’s look at an example what does
this look like
here i’m not going to talk to him
unless he sends me a message
i’m not going to talk to him unless he
sends me a message
so what is the sequence here in this
situation
i’m saying i’m going to wait
so after another way to say this
sentence is
after i receive a message from him i’ll
talk to him
but i want to i use this negative
pattern this i’m not going to talk to
him
unless he sends me a message to show
this this part he sends me a message
this must be true this must be true
after that i will do this but
this pattern uses the negative i’m not
going to do this
unless this thing happens this other
thing happens so if this does not happen
if he does not send me a message i’m not
going to talk to him
okay let’s look at another example
here’s one you might hear in speech
we’ll
probably finish work at six today
unless our manager gives us more to do
we’ll probably finish work at six today
unless our manager gives us more to do
so this means we think this is our plan
we’ll probably finish work today
unless this use here
means there’s a possibility that the
manager will give us something
else to do so we’re saying this is true
but maybe there’s a chance something
else will happen
we’ll probably finish work at six today
unless our manager gives us more
to do okay so these other conditions
we’re introducing other possibilities
here yeah
okay uh nohorah says i’m not
going to learn english unless i practice
a lot
nice okay yolanda says i’m not waiting
for him
unless he waits for me too good very
close i’m not waiting for him unless he
waits for me
to okay good um
all right let’s go to another example
here’s the business one
you’re not going to get a loan unless
you write a business plan you’re not
going to get a loan
unless you write a business plan so
this one here is my requirement yeah
so i have to this is my responsibility
i have to write a business plan in order
to get along
we express this with the negative
pattern
you’re not going to get alone unless so
that means you must do this
this condition must be true for this
to be possible you’re not going to get a
loan
unless you write a business plan so in
other words
you must write a business plan in order
to get a loan
okay cue one more all right
time’s going quick he’s probably
not going to accept the job offer
unless the company provides
an attractive salary he’s probably
not going to accept the job offer
unless the company provides an
attractive
salary so again we have this negative
here
probably not going to accept so low
chance yeah
he’s probably not going to accept the
job offer
unless so this means this is the
condition
the company provides an attractive
salary so attractive salary means a
number
a money right for payment that looks
good
right unless the company provides an
attractive salary
so a different way to say this sentence
is
if the company provides an attractive
salary
he might accept the job offer right
but we use this negative pattern to
express this to express that
this this condition is really important
to him yeah so these are different ways
different feelings
different uh uh kind of nuances we can
give to our sentences
by using these negative patterns so
unless is a good one
okay uh trang nguyen says the customer
isn’t going to meet us unless we have a
specific
proposal just use a specific proposal
yeah not any
close nice one though customer isn’t
going to meet us unless we have a specif
a special sorry special proposal very
nice very nice
okay caesar cesar says you are not going
to get a cake unless you pay me
priorities yeah love it great example
that was perfect grammatically perfect i
really like that thanks for sending that
cracked me up okay victor very close i’m
not going to accept this contract
unless you pay me more pay me so this
one
this verb this verb phrase unless you
pay me so not past tense there yeah
then it’s perfect unless you pay me more
okay
uh let’s see other ones
juan carlos says i am not going to get
the certificate
unless i pass the exam very nice
sentences everybody
good good good okay um all right
i think we’ll finish there for today
then so those were a couple
patterns you can use to talk about your
future plans in sequence like
in relationship to one another i’ll show
you the lesson boards one more time so
you can take a picture
if you like ready go here you go so if
you want to take a picture we talked
about
going to and will uh after i do
something i’ll do something else
and i won’t do something unless
something else alright so we covered
this today
and of course there are some videos on
the english class 101 youtube channel i
have
many videos about future tense and
conditionals too so use your excellent
search skills if you want some more
