phrasal verbs we have five phrasal verbs
for you guys and Dan is here to give
some more feedback to also help with
some of the tech things like just a
moment ago and I think it’ll it’ll be
great to have another perspective of
phrasal verbs right on yes yes so we’ve

jump right in and get started we’re a
few minutes late so I want to make sure
we don’t waste your time all right so
first we’d like to just introduce
ourselves and most of you probably have
seen my face before but so Dan would you
like to introduce yourself a little bit
sure I’m Dan and for about three years I
was a ESL teacher in Korea so that’s my
English experience and right now I’m a
barista which is a server of coffee and
a litt coffee at some point I will
probably start my own coffee shops yes
yes that’s what I’m doing right now so
you have some experience with teaching
English but also some other world like
experiences that you can share with us
and bring to the table right yes I have
good English yes he can speak English
folks wonderful all right so I would
like to just tell you really quick about
why I am interested in helping you learn
English because why would someone stand
here 6:00 in the evening on a nice
evening and for free talk with you on
the Internet well first of all you guys
are great I love all the comments that
you send and it really inspires me but
also this is how I learned my own second
language by speaking with people by
people just giving of their time and
being patient with me and that really
meant so much to me so I want to give
back and I also want to learn about your
story how did you learn English what are
your struggles what are some of the
things that inspire you to continue to
want to learn so today our phrasal verbs
are 5 and if you have downloaded the
mindmap
outline you’ll be able to follow these
and and we’re going to answer the 4
questions for each phrasal verb so Dan
is here to help me read some of these
questions so Dan would you like
to tell us the first phrasal verb sure
our first baby look phrasal verb today
is do-over do-over yes and do-over let’s
see let’s see
do-over do-over is can you explain it
yes is it what does it mean yes I’m
reading the chat box and explaining at
the same time all right
do-over is when you repeat something or
have to do it again and usually it’s
because you did not do a good job the
first time so if I say hey Dan I think
you’re going to have to do it over it is
something that maybe he didn’t do
correctly the first time yeah like what
would be an example Oh for example if
you if you made some rice the other day
you can made rice and it was great it
was had no problems but if you made rice
and invert right uh we want to eat some
rice with our meal so maybe I would say
um you’re going to have to do it over
right or you can even say this rice was
a do-over you can call it a do-over
because it was very bad so you want to
do it again right you’re gonna do it
again so let’s give some ideas about how
we can use this in a sentence so can do
you think you can break up the phrasal
verb so to break up the phrasal verb
means to put something between the verb
and the participle the participle today
is over so can you put something in the
middle of those two yes and usually that
would be it the word it so do it over
write that you can also and you could
also say I need to do my homework over
right I need to do dinner over something
like this
sure sure you could put it after or you
can put it in the middle so let’s give
some sample sentences and then we’ll
leave the chat box open to you okay so
you can answer and write some sentences
you think of sentences now and maybe
type them out yes so thinking about
some sentences and we are going to give
you some examples so the first sample
sentence is because you didn’t get a
good test score you’re going to have to
do the test over you’re going to have to
do it over which means do it again
because you didn’t do a good job right
or we could say the teacher is letting
me do it over the teachers letting me do
it over or I want to do it right the
first time I don’t want to burn the rice
the first time so that I don’t have to
do it over mmm
you can see here there are a lot of it’s
lots of its yes so in this separable
phrasal verb great sentence great word
they’re evaldo yes this is a separable
phrasal verb we can separate it yes so
in this separable phrasal verb we can
put it for anything else in between so
we would like to leave the chatbox open
to you and give you some more
suggestions of how to use this as you
give some samples such as sample
sentences yourself so Dan can you think
of any sample sentences with do-over
that we can use at the moment yeah my
own example and probably the most common
way to use this would be for either
dinner or homework okay so in school a
lot of people say it again right that
test was a do-over
test or I need to do the test over or do
it over do the test oh right right and I
think we’ve got some great sentences
here coming and wonderful we have
something from Claudio would you like to
read it yeah says I’ve got to do my
homework over perfect beautiful I’ve got
to do my homework over I’ve got to do it
over you said could I say redo in this
case as well so I have to redo my
homework right you could say exactly
I’ve got to redo my homework I’ve got to
do it over I’ve got to redo it do you
think one of those is used more
often than the other read it yeah
you could use both about the same I
would say do it over is maybe a little
more natural or moment I like this my
dog ate my homework so I had to do it
over great
oh oh man excuse yes yes my dog in my
homework so I had to do it over
beautiful sentence yes great sentence

going to move on to the next set of
phrasal verbs number two so if you would
like to leave another sentence for
do-over we can try to go back and look
at it after we finish talking about the
next set so the next set is a phrasal
verb number two and three and they go
together because they are a little
similar and there are slight differences
but they go together very well so the
second and third one are what we have
look over and read over yes look over
and read over to look over something and
to read over something it means yes to
examine or check something again to read
something again so this phrasal verb I
need to look it over I need to read it
over before I give it to my boss can you
break it up can you separate it yeah you
can it’s maybe not as common though
because we would usually say something
after not in the middle so I need to
look over the paper I need to look over
my homework again I need to look over
are the test results yes yes so let’s
give some sample sentences to help you
get a better picture of how to use this
so one of my sample sentences is and
this is a true situation last week one
of my German friends she sent me an
email and she said Vanessa can you look
over my thesis because I need to turn it
in in English but can you look over it
can you read over it so she wanted me to
read over it she wanted me to read it
over and in the situation you can put it
in the middle you can put it after she
wanted me to read it over she wanted me
to look it over and these kind of have
the meaning of doing something quickly
would you say like read it over look it
over
well I would say look over is quicker
okay but if I heard read over I would
think that’s more detailed longer okay
so that’s what I would think your your
instinct your English instinct is
telling you look over is something that
will happen quickly so I’m just going to
look over there over it really quick we
might say look over it quickly right
three over read over is like read every
word read every word excellent sure sure
so those are some great suggestions and
I think with this one as well we can
also say I like Vanessa will you read
over my sentence to see if it’s okay
will you look over my sentences make
sure you look over or read over a
contract before you sign it so we want
to give you a chance yes read over your
contract we want to give you a chance to
write some sample sentences with these
and we’re going to go back there were a
few questions that we did not answer yet
so while you’re writing some sample
sentences for look over and read over
we’d like to answer your final questions
about do-over so yes would you like to
read them so Lana said can I say I’ll
need to do it over again Oh would it be
redundant uh no I think that’s common to
say yes that’s very natural to say oh I
need to
I need to do it over again you brick
somebody might just say do it again so
it is a little redundant but right you
know it’s not a big deal right but a lot
of people would say that’s still but if
you really wanted to emphasize then the
first time you messed up really bad then
that would be you would say do it over
so if you messed up really bad and maybe
you did it twice then you’d say I have
to do it over again yeah they did it
three times right so it couldn’t be a
more emphasis so that’s a great question
yeah do it over again so maybe you made
rice once and burnt it and that was bad
and then you tried one more time and you
burnt it again ah I have to do it over
again yes yes all right let’s look at
some of these great questions or great
sentences with look over and read over
would you read anything that you see
that looks great we can read all right
so Claudia says I read my thesis over
before my oral presentation ah I wrote
my thesis over before my inner
presentation again maybe I would say
it’s more common to say I read over my
pieces ah do you think it’s because
there’s something longer in the middle
my thesis
yeah I read it over before my organs
could just be convention to more most
people say just read over together and
then what it is afterwards I read over
my thesis so I think you’re making a
good point that it can be slit but in a
lot of situations it might sound better
together so what you said Claudio is
great English there’s nothing wrong with
it thank you for your sentence but just
to let you know when you’re speaking in
casual conversation I read it I read
over my thesis before my or presentation
might be a little more natural together
hmm all right let’s see what does evaldo

to say that in Portuguese because we

you care about and you want to be polite
then you could say would you mind taking
out the trash would you mind doing a

this is a really polite mm-hmm all right
anyway maybe a little less polite you
could say could you could you just could
you hey could you take out the trash
could you do this for me maybe for small
things that aren’t very important yeah
so I would give you this could you look
over my essay please
oh no problem all right we have a
Portuguese comment here pear pear fado
Pepito barefaced oh all right we got it
all right so if anyone has any final
sentences or questions with look-over or
read over we will take a look at them
and if not we will move on to the next
set number four and number five which is
go over talk over
so ‘allah see number four number five go
over and talk over these these two I
think the first one go over is one of
the most important that we’re going
to talk about today and I don’t have any
statistics of the most commonly used
phrasal verbs in the world that might be
a little bit impossible but from my
experience I believe go over is going to
be one of the most commonly used phrasal
verbs that we talked about today go over
something I need to go over it let’s go
over it can you go over my paper what
does it mean go over me to review
something in writing or we could speak
together let’s go over our plans before
we go on vacation I usually think go
over is what not by yourself it’s with
one or two or three people sure with
somebody else it’s usually speaking
about it it’s writing about it it’s
discussing commenting right right right
and there’s a lot of crossover with
these and the previous verbs and this
means simply that with the previous ones
we talked about look over and read over
you can use go over and talk over in
some of these situations of course you
can’t say can you talk over my
presentation please because read over
obviously makes more sense but you can
use go over and talk over in most of
these situations so let’s give some
sample suggestions so first can you
break it up you think go go it over go
it over does not sound very good and we
can’t say go go it over I can’t even say
it it’s very strange to me yes I say go
over it sure yes I usually don’t break
that apart but talk over you can say
talk it over right right so go over is
the only verb we’re talking about today
that you can’t break up yeah so go over
needs to stay together but talk it over
it’s perfectly fine and it’s usually
only it we’d say in the middle - you
wouldn’t say talk the presentation over
right talk the homework over mmm yeah it
sounds the best between there yes so
let’s give some sample sentences to give
you a chance to think about how you
would like to use this and then we can
talk
got your sentences so our first sample
sentence is will you go over my
sentences with me and help me correct
them will you go over them with me which
means let’s talk about them let’s take a
look at them and see if they’re good
again this would be together so instead
of saying let’s read over this kind of
thing that would just be you or one
person but go over it together right
right or I need to go over what I
learned in last last week’s lesson so
maybe today you’re running a lot of
helpful phrasal verb tips you’re going
to want to go over this video again
maybe you’ll want to go over it again
and take some notes or go over it again
with your friends it’s such an exciting
video right so you can go over it again
yeah and go over might be more common
for things you’re listening to perhaps
or watching sure sure
yes a lecture or a lesson or something
like that right maybe makes more sense
when you’re writing you could use talk
over read over look over but for
speaking usually in casual conversation
we try to find the easiest simplest way
to say what you’re trying to say so
conversational English is usually not
that complicated you try to find the
simplest way to get your point across so
go over is one of these words that you
can use in a lot of situations so let’s
give some more examples and give you a
chance so start thinking about your
sentences and another example could be
um let’s talk over our plans let’s talk
it over let’s talk it over before we
make some plans so before we buy our
plane tickets to Istanbul we will be
going to Istanbul in October before we
buy our plane tickets to Istanbul do you
want to talk it over you and I would say
this maybe is less common than go over
right go over and over is go over is
very general so it could be looking at
reading talking thinking about you know
so for more detailed things right it
would make more sense to stay go over
right you could say let’s talk it over
and I think
this might be something you could use in
a business situation to like oh please
come to the meeting we’re going to talk
over our plans something that’s a little
more formal but you could use it
casually too let’s see I think we’ve got
some samples the wife is here oh yes I
have an example for talkover that can be
negative okay as well let us know so
there’s the positive where you say let’s
talk over this lesson let’s talk over
this our assignment our homework and
that that’s I think that’s less common
than go over but the negative way to say
it is she was talking over me in class
so that would mean interrupting so if I
talk at the same time as dad like this
all I’m talking and he can’t talk at the
same time but I’m talking and I this is
talking over at the same time your
conversations are being overlapped yes
that would be a pretty common thing to
say too that would be the the negative
version of talk over yes you can’t use
that for go over right right right so
talking over could mean talking at the
same time all right let’s take a look at
some of these sample sentences they are
going by quickly all right would you
like to read one of the first ones that
you see it’s not I want to go over these
plans with you again sure oh right so
you said again so that would be like
review and I think in the best fine yes
in this situation it could mean that we
have already gone over them and you want
to go over them a third time a second
time so maybe we’ve already talked about
your plans but go over can be used for
the first time as well yes but because
he said again it kind of feels like
we’ve already done it so let’s do it
again great sentence I want to go for
these plans with you again great and ol
Vuitton has a question go over talk over
it’s the same as review to go over
something or to talk over something it
can be yes yes like I said it could be
you’re looking at something again or it
could be the first time especially for
go over I’d say sure sure so maybe it’s
the first time you
talked about something like let’s go
over our plans for vacation we don’t
have any plans so right go over it let’s
talk about it for the first time and in
this case it’s not review but maybe
we’ve already talked about it hey let’s
go over the plans that we’ve already
made this could be review great question
great question alright we have a
sentence from Claudio would you like to
read it sure let’s go over our lecture
great sure
so this means let’s go over our lecture
it means Europe so that would probably
mean talk about the lecture after right
right right so when I read this sentence
I think that maybe you are giving the
lecture you are the teacher and in we
this is there is no context to the
sentence it’s just one sentence you had
context right right I would think that
it means you are a professor and you’re
talking with another professor another
teacher about what you’re going to talk
about in the lecture hey let’s go over
our lecture before we go into the
classroom yeah so that would be great or
if you are a student you could say let’s
go over the lecture yeah like sure yeah
yeah which means you’re a student mm-hmm
great let’s see you Marcio has one would
you like to read it let’s go over our
phrasal verbs we are learning at the
moment yes yes it doesn’t need to be a
question but yes let’s go over the
phrasal verbs we’re learning at the
moment beautiful sentence let’s go over
them let’s review them take a look at
them oh I like this one alright evaldo
yes go ahead I think I need to go over

understand better some issues that are
not well assimilated yet oh yes so are
you a native speaker dan is very

it could be to simply talk on the phone
um you want to talk over the phone and
maybe we don’t use that very much but
it’s a way to use talk over so it’s
adding to the your vocabulary mm-hmm yes
that’s creative I like it yes yes all
right and Marcy has a question I’m not
sure he says it could be I didn’t get
mmm I think I need some more information

there’s many comments so maybe you’re
asking a question about something we
already talked about could you write a
little bit more um uh all right and
