expressions today I want to let you know
that native speakers from different
countries have different ways of
expressing this concept so these
expressions are something that if you
set it in the US people would understand
you if you are watching this from the UK
let me know if this is something you say
in the UK in Australia is this something
you say in Australia these expressions
we use in the US but even within the US
there are different ways of expressing
this so I want to give you something
clear that you can use let’s start
talking about it though
last week on Monday one of my students
said that they were available for a
lesson next Wednesday to me I thought
this meant the next week but to them
they meant in two days so I needed to
ask them do you mean in two days or do
you mean in one week but there’s a
simpler way to express this to express
this concept I want to show you the
calendar so that we have something to
look at so let’s pretend that today is
Monday today is Monday if you are
available for a lesson on Wednesday two
days later it’s more clear to say I want
to have a lesson this coming Wednesday
this coming Wednesday this will be very
clear that it’s the closest Wednesday
it’s the closest Wednesday but maybe
you’re available for a lesson the next
week if you’re are available for a
lesson on Wednesday the next week you
can say I’m available for a lesson next
Wednesday next Wednesday and this also
works in the past so let’s pretend that
it is Friday it’s Friday if you said I
had a lesson last
Wednesday last Wednesday it might mean
this week or it could mean the week
before so if you want to be even more
clear you can say I had a lesson this
past Wednesday this past Wednesday so
this expression can be a little
complicated depending on which day of
the week it is but if you have something
really important like a business meeting
a lesson some sort of schedule that you
need to make sure the other person
understands exactly which day you’re
talking about I recommend using this
coming or this past this will be the
most clear to describe the closest day
what you can say next Wednesday or last
Wednesday and this coming this past will
be the most clear now it’s your turn can
you use both of these time expressions
this coming this past what is something
that you’re going to do this coming week
what is something that you did this past
