especially adjectives and adverbs in

this lesson i’m going to focus on

these words so to very

other words like these that are very

commonly used

in this lesson i’m going to talk about

some very

very common mistakes that i see with

these words

and i’m going to show you i hope a few

new ways

that you can use these especially this

word way so

uh i called this lesson emphasis words

to make it a little

maybe easier to understand we’re going

to talk about intensifiers today

these words so let’s look at

today’s lesson boards uh i think today’s

lesson boards are very easy to

understand

i’m going to talk about some small um

some small points

inside these today so this is our flow

today we’re going to talk about so

versus two in part one here

very versus really in part two and then

we’re going

to talk about whey and such not of

verses

just some different uh some different

words you can use

okay so let’s get started all right oh

okay shared oh okay then i’ll start

today’s lesson

let’s begin with where is it very and

really

i said very and really would be the

first one i think right

uh no i said sew in two okay let’s start

with so and two

so and two okay let’s begin with

so and two i put these together

because i see a lot of mistakes made

with these two words which with so and

too first let’s look at how we use them

i included a basic use and

today i’m including some casual uses

that you might hear in media

i wanted to talk about these uses uh

because they’re so

so common and i get lots of questions

from learners about the grammar

of these sentences so first the basic

use

of so before an adjective or an

adverb is like this for example that was

funny so that was funny is also correct

of course

but you want to express the level of

funny was higher

yeah that was so funny we use

so to emphasize or like to intensify

right to intensify to make funny more

intense

we use so plus adjective in this case so

funny

or before an adverb remember an adverb

tells us something about a about a verb

right how we do

some verb so for example example

you sing so beautifully you sing

so beautifully so this is the basic use

so right we have more intense

adjectives our adjectives are like

emphasized

so so of course we can use so

to connect our ideas yes that’s a

different use of

so but today i’m not going to focus on

that kind of so let’s look at these next

two examples

these next two i marked here with this

star casual

casual so this means maybe you haven’t

seen this in a textbook maybe you have i

don’t know so

what’s happening here the first pattern

here

is so plus maybe not you can use this in

a negative pattern

and then an ing verb so what does this

look like

for example we are so going to that

party

we are so going to that party or

in a negative i am so not wearing this

shirt

i am so not wearing this shirt what does

this mean

okay so here we have so before the verb

in this case a positive we are so going

to that party

this sentence shows the speaker

really really wants to go to the party

so yes you can say we’re going to that

party

but we are so going to that party

shows the speaker has very strong

feelings

about that decision so this

so makes this decision this choice

more intense we are so going to that

party

here is a negative example i am

so not wearing this shirt i’m so not

wearing this shirt

so for example someone like maybe your

relative

gives you a weird shirt and you try it

on and you think

this looks really strange you could say

i am so

not wearing this shirt this shows you

have a

strong feeling about this choice or this

decision

again i am not wearing this shirt we can

use the progressive

to show a strong decision yes that’s one

of the uses

of the ing form i’m not wearing this

shirt that’s a strong decision

but if you use i am so not wearing this

shirt

it makes it casual and it expresses

you’ve made a strong decision okay

he is so playing the field ooh good one

good one good one good expression nice

example

okay if you have other examples send

uh tan kang can we say this it so

means um i don’t think so i’m not quite

sure

uh what you’re trying to say there but

that uh that

little phrase no that would be incorrect

okay uh i’m looking kanwaji says we are

not gonna work on this project very nice

very nice okay

miguel says i am so full i ate too much

good that’s the basic use here

okay uh good and people are right

comments about appearance yeah so pretty

so beautiful these kinds of words yeah

these things

are the basic use here very nice

okay that looks good let’s go to this

last

casual use of so then yeah

what is this so so it’s a connection

this use is so plus a noun

so plus a noun and often the noun is a

person

or maybe it’s uh like a location

or it’s an experience so

let’s what does this mean when we use

this pattern it means

something is like that noun for example

that dress is so you that dress is so

you that means that dress matches you

really

well or it looks like something

you like like i saw that dress and i

thought

my friend would probably like that dress

that dress is so

you it matches your personality it

matches your style

okay another example this song

is so high school this song is so

high school so what does this mean it

means i heard a song

or i’m listening to a song now and it

makes me it causes me to remember my

high school experience

or the song was popular when i was in

high school

okay this song is so high school so

this use of so means the noun

here and the noun here have some kind of

like connection

or relationship yeah so again this is a

very casual use

of so so that’s so you that’s what this

one means

okay all right a very nice

question uh example sentences pluvio

pile says i’m so eating tuna today

that’s very specific nice job very nice

job

uh keshav says i’m so make sure i’m

so not going to that part if you want to

use

this pattern great make sure this knot

comes before the verb so not isn’t

before so

here not is before the verb yeah then

it’s perfect okay

all right uh victor you play piano so

beautiful

so if you want to use this one make sure

beautifully that’s the adverb yeah

beautifully

beautifully beautiful is the adjective

okay okay we have to finish this part

pair at the next pair very and

so very and really these are very

similar

uh words let’s talk about the difference

so very how do we use very we can use

very

plus an adjective or an adverb we just

use this

uh with so and with two as well

all right so there is some there are

some cases where we can use

uh these words in the same way but not

all of them

for example that movie was very

scary that movie was very scary okay

so very comes before my adjective

scary that movie was very scary okay

and she is very smart

she is very smart great okay

now a point here i have two

negative sentences here my neighbors

are not very nice my neighbors are not

very nice

and this recipe wasn’t

so was not yeah was not very good this

recipe was not very good this

is an important point with very we tend

to use

very to express these negative ideas

right so my neighbors are very nice is a

good thing right

my neighbors are not very nice is a bad

thing

right when you want to express that

negative

opinion you do that with very

very we don’t do that with really that’s

a key difference here

okay finally one more example this one

is an adverb

he runs very fast or he runs very

quickly

also okay so remember this key

difference between very

and really if you want to express this

negative

with not do that with very okay

uh all right let’s go on to the next one

really really so with this one again we

have this pattern

really plus our adjective our adverb

this book is really interesting

adjective

and she works really slow

okay so again this use is the same we

could use very in these sentences this

book is very interesting or she works

very slow

both are fine you could use somebody

asked what’s the difference between so

here

we can use so in these as well that

movie was so scary

she’s so smart or this book is so

interesting

we can use so in these cases we cannot

use two we cannot use two okay

all right some examples are coming in

with

very uh okay good

so everyone’s everyone’s been very nice

to me thank you for your nice comments

okay

he talks really fast is another good one

on youtube okay nice now

key point here with really

we can use really with verbs

we tend to see it with like emotion

verbs like

like or love or hate and sometimes

with like like uh like personal body

related actions like eating or drinking

for example i really like

healthy food i really like healthy food

here really comes before my verb yeah i

really

like i really like or here for emphasis

wow you really sleep a lot you really

sleep a lot

so you may see really used in this way

to show some kind of like intensity

about the verb that follows we cannot do

this with very

we cannot do this with so so you may see

really used in this way we tend yeah as

i said we tend to use this pattern

for talking about things we like or we

love or we hate

dislike like uh i really hate that thing

i really hate that food so we can do

this

with really okay

uh what’s the difference between too

expensive and so expensive

yeah let’s see i have a little bit of

time so

let’s quickly i’ve talked about some of

the differences between

uh these so s so

and very and really share

a usage yeah the first usage so with an

adjective

or an adverb yes we share those however

one huge difference here is that this

2 this 2 that i talked about has a

negative feel

so it means this adjective that

follows is like

uh i covered this right i did talk to

you about two right

i talked about so did i talk about two

earlier did i skip it earlier

i feel like i skipped it actually let’s

talk about two

i skipped it didn’t i i got so wrapped

up and so

okay let’s talk about two my bad sorry

everybody

so let’s talk about two we’ve talked

about very

really and so so let’s cover this two

point now so what is the difference

two expresses that something is

more than is necessary so

we can use it in the same grammar

pattern yes two plus

an adjective or two plus an adverb

and that means that it’s more than is

necessary

okay so for example this is too

expensive this is too expensive that

means

this price like i have i have an amount

i want to pay this price is more than

that

this is too expensive so two

communicates that negative feeling

right another one he speaks

too quickly he speaks too quickly

here 2 is before an adverb so that means

my pace the pace i want to listen to is

here

his pace his speaking pace is here so

it’s more than is needed it’s a bad

thing we use two to express that

okay so this point

right here is where i see many mistakes

especially in your comments in the

youtube comments or facebook comments

in chat comments i see lots of learners

use

two when they don’t want to use

two so for example a great example of a

common mistake

one time a uh someone wrote a comment

about like earrings

i saw a comment about earrings the

person said

your earrings are too big too big

that sounds negative right it sounds

negative

the person wanted to use so your

earrings are

so big to make a comment or to share a

simple opinion

about the earrings so please remember if

you use

two it expresses a negative

idea okay so this is a huge huge huge

issue i see for many learners finally

final point about two

we used to with much and many

i covered countable and uncountable

nouns in last week’s lesson yeah

if you watched so this too much or too

many

has the same feeling like it’s something

negative

like you have too much stuff you have

too much stuff

so too much much is used because stuff

is uncountable you have too much stuff

please clean up your room throw some

things away

or with a countable noun in this case

pizzas

we bought too many pizzas we have too

much food

so you can use too much and too many

before

countable and uncountable nouns again

key point with two it sounds negative it

sounds negative

so please remember this okay sorry i

skipped two before

i guess i was excited about so okay

all right great so that’s part one and

part two

for today’s lesson uh good we have a

little bit of time left

so we’ll go to the final part now

way and such way and

such uh lots of people are like what is

where i’ve never seen whey used before

oh before i go to this there are a

couple questions

in here um can i say i’m very attractive

yes you can

it sounds very confident but great okay

conor mcgee says friends live too far

from my house that is correct

you have too many problems in your life

okay good correct uh when do we use

so-called oh so-called is a different

use of so

i’m not going to talk about today you

use basically

so-called is used to to refer to

something

that maybe is is called by one name

but has other names kind of so it’s

different

from today’s topic uh okay

john carlo can i use very very

i like no i can’t think of a situation

we sometimes use

that was very very very very good if you

really want to make something

intense yeah you can do that but

generally we don’t

so much okay good i don’t see other

questions

let’s go to uh this last part way

most people well a lot of people say

what is

what is way we can use this as an

intensifier

way this i’ve marked here with casual

casual whey is a very very casual

intensifier typically

we pair we put together whey with

too much or too many patterns or a two

adjective pattern so we just talked

about

too much and too many or too adjective

right we use whey

before that to make it even

more intense okay so

some examples i ate way too much at

dinner

i ate way too much at dinner

and you have way too many movies

you have way too many movies okay

so this sentence i ate too much at

dinner

and this sentence you have too many

movies

these sentences are perfect 100 correct

if we add whey

this too many or this too much these

parts

become more intense so i ate too much at

dinner

sounds negative right i ate too much at

dinner

i ate way too much at dinner

increases the negative feeling oh i feel

really really sick that was really bad

whey helps us do this i ate way too much

at dinner

we cannot use very we cannot use so we

cannot use really

here i ate really too much i ate so too

much i ate very too much

cannot use these we cannot use these

this is the intensifier like the

intensifier intensifier

we use here okay so remember

this is very casual we would not use

this in a polite or a business situation

generally

okay all right onward so

here again i said we can use this

pattern with other

two plus adjective situations like i

cut my hair way too short i cut my hair

way too short or you took way too

long to get here you took way too long

to get here

so we can use two plus another adjective

other than these patterns yeah again

though please remember

we talked about these two two patterns

earlier

and two creates that negative feeling so

too short that’s a bad thing too long

that’s a bad thing so way emphasizes

that

negativity yeah so these are for

negative

situations okay all right

a farook gunner on facebook says way is

used for time and to express

quantity it can be used for all of those

things

like for time you took way too

long or that took way too long or way

too much

time so yes you can use it for time or

for quantities

but again please remember negative it

sounds negative using it with

too much too many and so on okay

all right let’s go to the last point

time is almost

finished such such i see lots of

issues with such relating to articles

so let’s cover such what is the deal

what is such

okay so here’s the basic pattern for

such

for emphasis we have such

plus a or an depending on the word that

follows

adjective noun so yes you can remove

this

adjective in some cases but we generally

uh we generally see it with an adjective

okay

for example it’s such a beautiful

day it’s such a beautiful day

such comes before this phrase right here

so we have the adjective and the noun

together it’s such a beautiful day

we cannot use very we cannot say it’s

very a beautiful day nope

or really nope nope not so either

we could say it’s a very beautiful day

that’s fine right before the adjective

but such we have to make a different

style sentence or a different sentence

structure

when we use such another one college

is such an exciting time

college is such an exciting time

so such comes before and in this case

and is used because i have a vowel sound

here

college is such an exciting time

and finally plural these are such

beautiful flowers these are such

beautiful flowers

no article here because

we’re using a plural noun these are such

beautiful flowers so such

gives emphasis again so it intensifies

it so

these are beautiful flowers perfectly

correct these are

such beautiful flowers it makes this

statement

more intense okay

all right i don’t see questions yet

people say people write very nice things

it’s such an amazing day good or you’re

such a good teacher

great great okay uh

someone writes stop texting and focus on

the video who’s texting

okay are you are you mad at me for

watching the i’m watching the comments

talking on facebook too

i’m watching two live streams at the

same time okay

um can just also mean

really uh my first answer is

no unless you have a very specific

example

no my first answer would be no okay

all right but that is the end we have to
