today we're at a crossroads in our
cultural relationship with mental health
all of us have a unique opportunity to
engage with others
with authenticity and in a way that
reduces
mental health stigma a

i have an opinion about pregnancy that's
not
the most popular
i loved being pregnant
oh i loved it
i loved it you might think okay yeah
she just had an easy time that's all
it's really not
it's waking up on the floor of a cold
prison cell
and having no idea how you got there
it's hiding in the bathroom at work
because you're shaking again and if
anybody sees you you're going to lose
you
sometimes i wonder
what would happen if my 20 year old self
stressed lonely and homesick
would not have found a good counsellor
would i be giving this tedx talk today
would i be addressing this wonder
let me start with a statistic
if you think about all the people that
you know one out of every four has
serious mental illness and among those
that do
given that many of you are young people
it's impo
i have always
been inspired by mind over matter
i grew up listening to stories of
ordinary people
doing extraordinary things using sheer
willpower
stories that inspired me and left me
wondering
how th
i've been broken from top to bottom
literally broken from top to bottom
i've broken bones in my feet leg
hand elbow and shoulder
and i have to say that the days and
weeks after these breaks were some
on the 25th
of july 1978
history was made given hope
and options to all those yearning for a
baby
that thought it wasn't possible you see
