It was November 1, 2002,
my first day as a principal,
but hardly my first day in the school district of Philadelphia.

I went on a snorkeling trip off the coast of the Bahamas.
I'd actually never swum in the ocean before,
so it was a bit terrifying.
What I remember the most is,
We do not choose where to be born.
We do not choose who our parents are.
But we do choose how we are going to live our lives.
