Screendance the art of combining film and dance in the void
[Applause]
what if
you could experience physical movement
the same way a dancer does
you can become fully immersed in a
dancer’s performance
through the lens of screen dance
screen dance a term coined by katrina
macpherson
douglas rosenberg and a group of video
dance experts
is a hybrid art form that combines dance
and film
it provides a new perspective on the
movement and emotion of the performer
allowing for a very profound encounter
where the audience can take a closer
look
at the story being told by the artist
the videographer brings audience members
inside the dancers movement
through the use of close-up and
hand-held camera shots
creating an intimate connection and
kinesthetic
experience so imagine seeing the
dancer’s pupil dilate
their bicep twitch or a bead of sweat
dripped on their forehead
now envision yourself following their
exact
movement pathway and becoming their
dance partner
you might not be able to have an
experience like this from the nosebleed
section in a live show
but screendance enables these
microscopic details
and immersive moments to transform the
performance
then we have the order in which the
shots are arranged
ellen bromberg my screen dance professor
and mentor
taught me that the choreography is in
the edit
as the editor i have the ability to
re-choreograph the dance
and change the story by choosing the
sequencing of the shots
so a sequence featuring a head roll then
chaotic movement
then a calm eye looking back at you
tells a meaningful story that was
carefully pieced
together the screen dance i filmed and
edited
that i’ll be sharing with you today
tells a story of silent struggle
vulnerability and getting lost in one’s
own thoughts
i hope that you can feel this on a deep
level and really connect with the dancer
nicole smith as you move through the
performance
with her
lastly we have location location is
arguably the most important component of
screen dance
because it determines the entire
aesthetic of the film
the setting of the story and it lays out
the new sort of stage for dancers to
interact with
it also transports the audience to a new
place that is not the conventional
theater
each and every screen dance will be
radically different from the next
because each location produces a new
outcome
a new story my screen dance is
ironically a bit different
and that my goal was actually to
eliminate location completely
it’s not in a building or up in the
mountains
my screen dance takes the audience to a
place that does not exist
it is in the void
thank you
