if you have ever been in a car with a
gps
a global positioning system and you’ve
had it set to the
female voice there is a chance that you
and i
have taken lots of fabulous trips
together
i meet a lot of people in my travels and
they want to share with me about their
relationship
with their gps and people seem to have
one
they call them by special names and make
all kinds of connections with that
voice of reason in their device
now my speaking voice unexpectedly ended
up in over a billion gps and smartphones
and
elevators and cruise ships and software
applications
all the way around the world telling
people where to go and
what to do giving them directions while
i’m here with you
right now but i’m getting ahead of
myself let me take you back
to the beginning i am from a town called
makai makai my map of australia
is on the queensland coast right next to
the great
barrier reef in the pacific ocean
right on the on the coastline there the
makai and whit sunday’s region
is glorious we have sugar white sand
we have turquoise blue water and nine
out of the ten
most poisonous snakes in the world
if the snakes don’t get you we have the
man in the grey suit
the shark uh and we also have the box
jellyfish they’re a kanji which uh
you know you’re in a lot of trouble
after only
20 minutes i grew up in paradise
seven years of age i’m sitting in our
family living
room watching television and on comes
the most
important and most influential person in
the
entire world

right this blonde australian singer
who had gone to america and everybody
loved her and when i saw olivia
my life changed i had direction
i knew what i wanted to do i wanted to
become a professional singer
and move to america
now it is my experience
that when we see our greatest mentors
or inspirational figures they help to
activate
what i call our inner gps
um you might call it your inner knowing
or instinct or intuition
but whatever you call it it is worth
listening to and in that moment when i
saw olivia
on television as a young girl
it activated my inner gps and i had a
dream
to follow now
fast forward i did get on that plane
and i made my way across
the pacific ocean and i landed at jfk
airport in new york city
i became a professional singer and
i moved to america
i listened to my inner gps along the way
i steered myself through overcoming
debilitating anxiety
and financial disaster unexpectedly
my singer-songwriter career took a turn
and i
ended up creating an empowerment brand
out of that one voice-over job
and have traveled the world speaking and
singing on stages and screens
to help people learn how to recalculate
when things did not go as planned
it is never too late to recalculate
even when things seemed dire
from olivia newton john and that
childhood experience my life
set its course
a mover and shaker business person
reached out to me and said karen i’d
love you
and your husband to come and come to
this special event
there will be lots of vips and
celebrities there and i want you to come
and sit at my corporate table
so on the big night my husband and i
arrived at cipriani’s
on wall street in new york city my
husband was wearing his tuxedo
and i was wearing my i’m going to meet
lots of fabulous celebrities tonight
dress we walked in to the ballroom which
was
gorgeous and the mover and shaker
business colleague saw me and said karen
come with me
and he he grabbed me and he heralded me
across
the room to where there was a swarm of
people and in the middle of those
those people there was somebody he
pushed me through to the middle
and there i was standing face to face
with the most important and influential
person in the entire
world olivia newton
and i started to gush
and i said i want to thank you because
every major decision i’ve ever made is
because of you in my life
from where i live to what i do and i
just i just want to thank you
and she said oh that’s such a lovely
thing to say what’s your name
and i said karen jacobson and olivia
newton-john said
and i kid you not you’re karen jacobson

i am still getting
over it and in that moment
i knew i was okay that i had reached
my destination and that maybe
just maybe i was okay
maybe i was enough
