ah
[Music]
that song is everybody wants to rule the
world by tears for fears
this here is a hammer dulcimer a persian
instrument
known in america in folk circles and
mountain music
i first heard and saw the hammered
dulcimer in 1986 by an artist named rich
mullins
it took forever to find one because you
couldn’t just walk into your local
guitar center
and pick one out but in 97
my wife bought me one with some wedding
gift money
it took a while to get acclimated to
such an instrument
and uh to begin composing with it like i
wanted to
in 2016 facebook came out with something
called facebook live
and so in august of that year i went
live for the first time to a whopping
six people to a total of 47 views
so when my wife asked me the next week
if i wanted to go live again i was like
well
it wasn’t that many people who cared
about it so anyway i drummed up the
courage
went live again and this time i played
rule the world for the first time
all the way through no edits mistakes
and all
at the next morning we had
31 000 views
that was pretty substantial in itself
but a big weekend later and we had over
54 million views
today it stands at over 120
million views now that could have been
enough and the story could have ended
there
but among those millions of views
were none other than kurt smith and
jamie wollam of tears for fears
we contacted each other between email
and twitter
and kurt gave my wife and i backstage
passes
to come see the band in indianapolis the
next month
again the story could have ended there
and it would have been a story to tell
for the ages
but the next day kurt and jamie came up
to
our house to meet the family and to do
some music
so kurt sat on our swing and
sang rule the world jamie pulled out an
ottoman that he could use as a drum
i got the hammer dulcimer and we did
this wonderful acoustic version of
rule the world for millions more to
enjoy
in every venture and
work of art there’s moments of
doubt and moments of courage there’s
feast and famine
but we keep doing what we do
and showing up day after day because we
hope beyond
hope that someday someone will fall in
love with what we make
today i hope that you find peace and joy
in my music
