Humanology vs Technology
let me ask you a question
what were your first thoughts when you
woke up this morning
what were the first words you said when
you awoke
did you take time to reflect on the
course of your day
or did you reach to the side
switch on your mobile phone or your
tablet look at your emails
facebook linkedin or any other social
media
how has that affected or shaped your day
up until now my name is wendy
chalmersmill and i’d like us to reflect
on the world
we now live in
we have an amazing superpower you
have an amazing superpower and that
superpower
is being human through our dialogue
our conversations both internally and
externally
our moods our behaviors our attitudes we
can create and
shape our weeks days
lives we can take
the steering wheel of the boat of our
life
and go to the destination that we want
rather
than being buffeted around by the ways
of technology
that exist around about our world
the world is changing so fast let me
take you back
to the 80s 40 years ago
i had a small office in a large
service office and in my office i had a
typewriter
and i remember the day well when a new
computer was brought into the center of
the serviced office
to support all the offices that were in
this building
it sped things up so much for me i no
longer had to type
so many different letters to a variety
of different clients
i could offer one dictaphone message to
the lady who sat at the computer
she would send the messages out to my
clients and my day became
easier two years later
after deciding i could never have
technology or be engaged with the
computer
i had two computers in my office
i taught myself how to use the
technology
how to interface with my clients via
emails
and i don’t really remember when the
balance of shift changed
from me being a human being
to being a human doing
the balance of time when technology no
longer became an asset
but it became a process that managed me
and my day
fast forward to today
in my home i have
probably 15 to 16 computers
in my home me and my sons
be it smartphones tablets
computers
my life their life seems to be
umbilically connected
to the world of technology to social
media
to the world wide web
it’s hard sometimes to take time to step
back just to be
to be human to tune into your
super power
technology is addictive it stimulates
the exciting hormones of cortisol the
adrenaline
to the point where i look at my sons and
no longer do they sit in front of the
television
watching a movie or a program they sit
in front of the television
with an ipad or an iphone
or any tablet to be stimulated
constantly
it’s as though they get bored and they
need the stimulation
the excitement of technology and
the television
over the last year i have been given a
gift
and that gift has been time
it’s given me the the covert has given
me
the time to step back to reflect
on my life and my relationship with
technology
i found myself reflecting on my my inner
needs
what drives me what drives my purpose
what connects me to self
what allows me to supercharge my
humanity my own
drivers i find that i’m able now
more to ride the waves of technology
rather than drown
in the sea of it
i ask you to reflect on your life
and how you connect with self
or how you’re driven by technology and
the connection to
technology are you umbilically connected
to technology
when you leave the house without your
mobile phone what sensations does that
offer you
when you climb a mountain are you
connected to self
or to technology
remember we can supercharge
our superpowers
take time to be a human being
rather than a human doing take time to
reflect
on your needs on what nurtures you
what nurtures your strengths
i leave you with the idea of
an acronym the bbc
[Music]
take time to be take time to be present
take time to be mindful take
time to just connect to you
take time to be balanced to balance the
external world with your internal needs
and lastly connect to self
connect to your needs nurture
your humanity
thank you
